I didn't receive anything but I was told by one chess player that I should sign something, so I've emailed them to see what's up. |

Congratulations FM Tate!
Scottish Chess has never been so exciting as far as I can remember. |

Alan.
Congratulations. Hopefully the norm is OK but that certainly is not how Stewart Reuben interprets the regulations.
For future reference you must get a norm certificate before you leave the event also if the norm was obtained during the tournament but not at the end (eg after 9 rounds but you then lose in rd 10) then you should also get a printout of the tournament chart for the appropriate round showing the norm was made.
Hopefully another performance like this at the London Classic. |

Reading the reports, Alan's performance has been noticed, and he has been mentioned on days 4 to 6. |
Like many readers I've been looking for results daily - often more frequently.
This had been a really superb performance by Alan - would be good for any of our GM's
Ref IM and GM norms.
If FIDE accepted tournament could give norms then should that acceptance not stand. If strictly speaking the event should not be valid for norms then lets not point it out for the world to read.
I suspect that detailed inspection of data in the public domain would reveal other tournaments awarding norms with time controls not on that FIDE list.
Surely this is one thread were we can be positive and celebrate some remarkable results.
And as for the intermittent suggestion that perhaps these games won't be FIDE rated - the mind BOGGLES. |
If strictly speaking the event should not be valid for norms lets not get an opinion from England and point it out for the world to read.
MY MIND IS STILL BOGGLING |

My congratulations, too, Alan. It is a good example to everyone of what is possible by putting in hard work and adopting a positive attitude.
I now feel sure that Alan's score will qualify for a GM norm, although it does highlight some unfortunate flaws in the phrasing of the relevant FIDE rules (not an unknown or even all that uncommon a situation).
As the Rijeka organisers appear to have been aware that their time limit is in fact slower than the basic stated FIDE minimum of 90 minutes for 40 moves + 30 seconds cumulative for each move played from move 1 [in Rijeka it was 90/40 +15 minutes + 30 seconds cumulative], and because it is patently better than the minumum, I can't see how FIDE can refuse to approve the norm.
If they don't approve, I'm pretty well certain that appropriate background approaches by Chess Scotland will be able to sort this out, perhaps accompanied with some suggestions as to how to re-phrase the appropriate rule ... FIDE have in the past been quite good on this kind of thing, in my experience, unless there are unusual circumstances (not remotely present here).
On any change to the rules, my own purely personal view, is that the current minimum, 90/40 + 30 seconds per move cumulative from move 1, is actually a bit too fast for the assessment of title norm purposes. I think the minimum should at least be the Rijeka 90mins / 40 moves +15 mins + 30 seconds per move cumulative from move 1; although I would prefer, again purely a personal view, to see 90/40 + 30 mins + 30 seconds. |
