This is the kind of performance that could change Alan as a Chess player. There is more to it than just getting a better grade and a norm or title. This kind of performance will give him a massive boost in confidence and show him that the guys who are IMs and GMs are not unbeatable. I truly think that is a psychological barrier that you must overcome before you are going to get such a title yourself.

In any case it's a fantastic performance and Alan deserves a norm and FM title from it.

Extremely good final game Alan, you must be ecstatic after destroying an IM in such a rapid and efficient manner! Laughing

Really well played! Very Happy

Another thing that hasn't been mentioned much: can Alan win a prize? Cool

Is Alan's amazing performance a GM norm?

6/9 scored = 66.6%

average opposition = 2516

6/9 is required for average opposition of 2475-2519.

What a tremendous final game after the disappointment of missing all the wins yesterday.

It is a GM norm by performance. It is a damn fine performance and not just that. If I worked it out correctly Alan is now an FM!

Norms aside, isn't that an fm title for reaching 2300. 2nd place must net a few bob too. Well played! A truly remarkable performance.

Thanks a lot for all the support on this thread. I really didn't expect it!
I came 8th, won 300 euros, and have been told by the Arbiter that I have a GM norm.

He highlighted this part

90 minutes with 30 seconds cumulative increment for each move starting from first move

implying that the extra 15 minutes at move 40 changes nothing.
Everyone I spoke to believed 100% that the norm will stand.

I think this is the point AndyBurnett made?

Congratulations Alan, a quite staggering result - I can't think of anything remotely comparable in Scottish Chess terms.

Was this Joe and his promised FM title and IM norm that he didn't get for winning the Major Open at the British?

Thanks Alistair. What were the circumstances surrounding Joe's title?

Very Happy Did he also give you an IM norm certificate as well as you qualify for both?

Fantastic news. Well done!
