Incidentally, not having aspiration for Chess achievement does not mean that a person is not aspirational. I don't care what my grade is as long as I enjoy the Chess, because that's the only reason I play it.

My aspirations in life are well beyond a high grade at what is essentially just a game.

We've got to be prepared to think outside the box.

I think a "Donate" button would be a good idea.

Congresses borrowing the wireless boards would pay a fee for their rental which would also generate some money.

We could get to the point where every Congress game in Scotland is published live on the Internet, would that be a world first?

How about players bidding for the right to play on a live board?

It may be countered by an opponent asking to be paid for playing on the same board!

Keep the ideas coming!

I'd suggest making it part of membership services.

membership,
membership with magazine
membership with magazine and live board viewing access. A few quid extra/year

So not much more of a charge to those who are already committed to supporting/playing chess and thus increasing the benefits of membership.

For those just wanting to view games they could pay a bit more.
When realising that they might go for membership also?

Glasgow Congress, 160 people mean 80 boards. looking at about 60-70k!

Angus,

Not that I don't think this is a good idea, but I would not be happy to do live games unless it meant it would be free to watch. I think if we brought this in I would have to make sure others could use the equipment.

Also there is the sponsor aspect. We nationally and a congress locally could look to get sponsorship and display on the live board page. Restricting who can see will reduce the chances of sponsorship

As I said, it is an excellent idea and please keep them coming!

Hm yea, quite a lot... but achievable in a reasonable amount of time if we got a few of the boards per year. Say 4 per year, we'd be there in 20 years.

In the meantime I suppose we could have the top few boards in each section viewable.

The software now has a free licence for 50 boards which is a bonus as before you had to increase your board count.

Is the broadcast output still a shockwave flash and lots of little files?

Reading between the lines and going by it's conspicious absence from the calendar, I'm guessing there will not be a Glasgow Congress in 2011. Would I be correct in that assumption?

On a broad fund raising note, has consideration been given to Chess Scotland becoming a charity or a new chess charity body being formed. The ECF are considering such a move and I've copied below some details from their proposal, which outline the obvious financial benefits.

"REORGANISATION

1) Establishment of a new charity

It is intended to present Council with proposals for the establishment of a new chess charity. This would take on all of the ECF’s principal activities in respect of amateur chess, i.e. in practice, everything except International chess, the British Championships (in whole or in part) and interaction with FIDE (including rating and titles) and the European Chess Union.

It is envisaged that the membership scheme set out above would relate to the new charity, not the body dealing with professional chess.

One of the major potential benefits of charitable status is that donations, including membership subscriptions, should be eligible for Gift Aid, provided that the individual is a UK taxpayer and gives consent. Gift Aid makes donations and membership subscriptions go further by allowing the charity to reclaim tax, i.e. equivalent to an extra 25%.

If this comes to pass, it will either mean that the charity will have additional funds to invest in the development of English chess or it could reduce the cost of membership. This would be determined by those who govern the charity.
"

On sensory boards, I think I've grasped the set up of the desired system. Does Chess Scotland have any DGT XL clocks?

Would I be right in thinking that you could buy the Caissa "operating system" and then add to it board by board?

Are there any costs involved in collecting donations via paypal?

If a paypal button was set up for DGT fundraising would it be possible to also have a graphic depicting funds raised v targets (anyone remember the Blue Peter Appeal? That's a whole load of fund rasing ideas on ot's own. Any old stamps?).

If every adult Chess Scotland member committed to donate just 25p a week to the fund how much would be raised in 1 year? Would banks accept a standing order for such a small amount without charges?

Insurance costs made up 5.4% of total Chess Scotland expenditure last year. This appears to be quite a high percentage. Has this been reviewed recently?

Until I speak to the GCL Mancom, I can't say for sure. There will be a Glasgow congress this season

Currently this is not something we are looking it. I believe it has been rejected in the past by previous boards but I am not 100% sure

24 if I remember correctly. We were using them at Prestwick!

You would need the collector, and software, with the software now allowing 50 boards, it would be easy to add another by purchasing the board and system board

Having seen Andrew McHarg's programming skills, I think I can safely say it is possible!

This is a Mac Question, To be honest I don't know if they will accept £1 a month.

The problem with having some of the oldest running tournaments in the world is we have the trophies for them. The insurance for the trophies + for our equipment is reviewed every couple of years
