Performance was agreed at the AGM. THe way of measuring performance was not.
w-we is one way TPR is another. The method was anounced on the entry form.
Before the start of the last round is not the time to complain.

Andy says that the best method of resolving a tie is the result between the players and yet he says that if TPR is used then the result between the players should b disguarded.
Why should one player be deprived of their best result? That hardly seems fair either. Indeed it seems less fair.

I state again that there is no fair method of tie-break other than a play-off. This is not practical.

Should just have a game of Jenga to decide it.

we are thinking of making the 2012 champion an olympiad player - don't want anyone getting in as a result of dodgy tiebreak rules.

Alex, you haven't answered my question. Two players get 8.5/9 , draw with each other, beat an identical weak field. One player is a strong player just outside the olympiad team (say 2400 IM), the other a weak hacker who got lucky.

The hacker wins the championships and plays in Turkey

That would take some freak results for a weak hacker to get 8.5 /9

Lets put that into perspective using this years event. Doing a theoretical accelerated draw, they would have to play at least the top 6 players meaning that they have beaten 5 players with an average grade of 2217 and drawn with a 2464!

You know tthat I don't agree with the idea of the Champion getting an automatic Olympiad place.

If you are going down that line then I would say that to be considered for Olympic selection you must satisfy either being over 2500 or have played in the Scottish in the previous 3 years.

Even if you agree with Andy's idea it makes much more sense to say that the previous year's champion qualifies for the Olympiad team rather than the current year. Holidays may be limited preventing the Champion from playing and some Olympiads will be held before the Scottish takes place.

With regard to your 'hacker'. The top player should have beaten him in their individual match. ANYONE who scores 8.5/9 deserves the recognition.

Great coverage, although Craig has had different name spellings and today several are wrong - an aspect for some greater automation in future ? Sad

Congratulations to Keti for winning her game (and Championship I'm presuming), but did her opponent miss a chance with 45...Qc7+, 46. Ne5 Rh1+? Not sure if the resulting Queen ending is drawn or not, but surely it was a better try!

Edit - I think I missed that Keti can play 47. Kxh1 Qc1+ 48. Kh2 Qf4+ 49. g3 Qf2+ 50. Kh1 Qe1+ 51. Kg2 Qd2+ 52. Kf3...even then, 52...Qh1+ may still result in a check on e4, followed by capturing d4 and e5!

Edit Edit - Ignore me - Qd2-h1 would be a special move to pull off in the circumstances... Embarassed

Can't white just go (Qf4+) Kg1 Qe3+ Kf1 and gradually leak out or block wtih a piece without returning the knight?

Edit: Oh, Qxd4+...getting rusty
