As Home Director, the Richardson comes under my reponsibility. My personal view is that the draw should be unseeded. If Andy Muir wishes to maintain that policy then he has my fullest support. Equally though, if he wishes to change the policy then I will support him.
To those who advocate a central venue, each club would have to make an equal contribution to the costs to the hire of a hall for a certain day. This would have to be worked out well in advance for the idea to be feasable.
If there was a demand for this, then CS would be prepared to make the arrangments, but the costs for the earlier rounds would have to borne by the participating clubs. It is only finals day themselves that CS budgets for. |

Strangely enough, I find myself agreeing completely with GN on this one! 
4 seeded teams and 10 player pools to base seeding on seems fair to me.
The idea of having all games played in one location is good in principle, but factoring in that some games are re-arranged by clubs to allow more of the usual players to compete (example if it clashes with capelle, 4NCL etc) then this may cause a little bit of upset.
However I'd say it'd be worth giving it a go. Would probably result in the biggest gathering of Scotland's top 30-40 players in a number of years. |

I'm not too bothered about seeding the main draw one way or the other (though the proposed 'average rating of top 10' system seems a good one) - I can see the argument for it, but I quite like the 'anyone can play' thing, it is a cup after all.
That said, I think seedings should definitely be used to determine who plays a preliminary round. The two most successful teams of the last decade having to play off against each other before anyone else had even pushed a pawn in anger was rather silly (if perhaps slightly amusing).
As what would I suspect generally be a rather unnecessary corollary, I'd add that when deciding the four seeds, one place should be reserved for the reigning champions, regardless of whether they qualify in grading terms or not. |

Great advantage to me in not seeding is no calculations !
Asking all teams to submit squads is a bit tiresome
Do Poly wish to play Hamilton in prelim next year ?
I always enjoy these matches and would be delighted with a similar draw. |

A few comments as a Richardson ex-player and ex-organiser:
Start of Play The current Rules Book (on the website) gives the current situation for games in Scotland:
“Regarding Law 6.6, Chess Scotland adopts the position that the default time should be 30 minutes (10 minutes in Rapid games) and that the words >unless the arbiter decides otherwise= should be added. This should apply by default to all games in Scotland unless varied in advance by the tournament organiser”
Thus a time of 30 minutes applies by default but the Richardson organiser can put something different in the competition rules.
Seeding: When I organised the event, the seeding (of 4 teams) was done on weighted performance over the last three years. I’m not commenting for or against this now - I’ll leave it to current Poly players to do that.
Draws: Who is “John” that GN refers to? When I was organiser the actual draw (which was for the whole event rather than round-by-round) was physically made by someone from another club – usually Sam Collins.
General: Although this board provides interesting discussion, it’s as well to remember that it’s a club competition for CS member clubs and that the clubs should be consulted for their opinions as clubs, rather than going by who makes most comment here. |

This appears somethnig of a contradiction as this year we have already observed Andy Muir alter rules in Richardson based on his personal view as controller and citing polls on this noticeboard as backing for the changes e.g. FIDE rating the event. Noone consulted clubs on that and I'm pretty sure some clubs would have objected if asked.
My own view is that club consultation should be required and polls on this board whilst interesting shoudl not be seen as sufficent evidence to change anything. |

I am currently collecting names/votes on the FIDE rating issue.
I intend at the moment not seeding next year's tournament and changing the default time for appearing at the board to 1 hour for next year unless I get an avalanche of emails saying the opposite. |
