Fergus Skillen recently entered the Green Pencil award, a creative writing competition for school children in Edinburgh in the P4-P7 age range. (www.edinburgh.gov.uk/greenpencilaward) This year's theme was "Think Global, Act Local" with entrants promoting a Scottish or local environmental issue close to their hearts.

Out of almost 900 entries, Fergus's poem, 'Pollution in Chess' was highly commended (2nd=) at an awards ceremony in the Edinburgh central libary on 27th November.

15.10.09 Pollution in Chess

I was playing chess one wet afternoon,

When I saw the board as the world with pieces coming alive,

The bishop is a holy man,

But his Churches and Cathedrals will crumble,

The rook is a strong sturdy castle,

Old buildings like castles will tumble,

The knight is a strong handsome horse,

Animals like him will die out.

The King and Queen are rulers,

Their lively, fun kingdom will collapse.

The pawns are their trustworthy people,

Will choke on fumes and die.

The chess board is a beautiful planet,

Where all these great things once lived.

That planet is an empty ball floating in space.

Who has the planet got to thank?

Pollution!

It must be stopped now,

Checkmate!

Wee Fergus is a talented lad,
and his poem aint half bad.

It's so good I am going to nick it
and on The Corner I will stick it.

And there it will be for the whole world to see
and I will say it was written by me.

How could you be so cruel
To take his work from school
And claim it as your own?

That is so mean and nasty
No it isn’t very crafty
Your reputation’s blown

He wants to save the planet
Your Corner we may ban it
Instead play chess and pick no bone!
