In the 1980s, there was a regular adult home international tournament.
The ECF have proposed recuscitating this. Would there be any interest ? Unlikely to be any funding, weekend in England, 3 games, might be like 4NCL.
" Hi all,
I have recently taken over as Director of International Chess for the English Chess Federation and would like to hear if there would be any interest in an idea I have for an event prior to the 2010 Olympiad.
My idea is to host an event along the lines of The Four Nations event http://previews.chessdom.com/four-nations-chess-challenge whch was held in Norway in February 2008 where 4-6 countries play each other over 3-5 days and from my own perspective the benefits would include giving potential/future international players the chance to play for their country prior to being thrown into an Olympiad or European Team or merely giving the established players a run out before the Olympiad itself. I would probably prefer to have seperate men and womens teams but again would be open to the opinions of others on this.
I should add that I'm offering the proposal without any sponsorship in place so I'm not able to guarantee to pay fees, accommodation and travel but if there is support from yourselves then it's something I'm prepared to look into and come back to you with a firm offer. I would tentatively suggest Easter as a possible time to hold it (to fit in with students, holidays etc) so it would be before selections are made for the Olympiad but again I am open to other suggestions including where to hold the event and in which country.
Many thanks,
Lawrence Cooper
Director of International Chess
English Chess Federation "
