Sep 1 2009: Chess Scotland Job Vacancy.

Chess Scotland (CS) are looking for an individual to work from home to process CS membership and ancillary tasks. This is a self-employed paid post involving an estimated 10 hours a week - time spent will vary according to the level of knowledge of various computer systems currently used by CS.

The membership secretary should be the only source for name and address data for all involved in CS. The membership secretary has become responsible for maintaining several of the list functions within the organisation such as Clubs, Coaches, Arbiters, Chaperones, Calendar, Contacts as well as members. These lists all appear on the CS website and are generated from the databases kept by the secretary.

Tasks include:
Maintain database of membership and update website information.
Distribute membership cards.
Maintain the online calendar and the event links on the front of the website.
Supply a weekly update file of membership for integration into the CS grading program.
Arrange the annual POY contest.
Upload lists to website - Clubs, Coaches, Arbiters, Chaperones, Calendar.
Collect payments by cheque from members and the online PAYPAL system. Arrange for bank transfers to treasurer.

Currently the membership systems use the ACCESS program. The level of work for any new secretary will be related to whether they can use ACCESS or can find an alternate system.

Applications should be made by email to Douglas Bryson, CS Customer Services Director, before September 14 - send applications to grading@chessscotland.com All applications will be acknowledged and applicants will be sent a more complete job description.

Yes - should have mentioned that GEORGE ANDERSON is standing down after several years of fine work developing the membership secretary role. George will continue in the post until job is filled.

Dougie,
I understand, but should the news of George stepping down be announced before applications for his position were invited?

Quick Q: what is 'self-employed' about this role? Does this mean that it doesn't have a salary attached to it and if so how does the person in the role make money from it?

Thanks
A Cool

It is "self-employed" in regard to the person is responsible for their own national insurance and tax payments.

There is a set fee paid monthly by CS but the incumbent doesn't have set hours and has flexibility in the way they carry out the tasks.

The incumbent will be expected to provide their own working tools eg a computer, internet connection, telephone etc. Relevant expenses may be claimed however.

I should probably clarify for the CS officials, that it is not enough to call a person self-employed, they also need at least one other source of income, or they are not self-employed and you will have to do the PAYE stuff and pay the 12.8% NIC.

Richard Heathwood of Edinburgh has been appointed Membership Secretary and will start work after George Anderson steps down on December 1. The email addresses membership@chessscotland.com, calendar@chessscotland.com will be transferred to Richard on December 1.

We are satisfied with our interpretation of what constitutes self-employed status.
