Hi Jacqui,
I have heard rumour that there will be no CS national primary team championship this year - can you confirm whether this is true or not. As the Lothian League day 1 has traditionally been used as the Lothian qualifier I need to know so I can correctly inform the participating teams and amend the details on the entry form.

As already agreed, we would announce what is happening with the Primary Team Championships after the Directors Meeting. I have been holding off this posting until the minutes were freely available, but I am concious that time is pressing with the proposed Lothian Qualifiers fast approaching.

At the meeting, one of the many areas that we discussed was the Junior Review Report. In that it was stated that CS was not fit for purpose and it was also stated that the schism with SJC had to be addressed in order for Junior Chess to prosper in Scotland.

Taking these two criticisms on board, and given the anti-competitiveness of running parallel events, the proposal was put forward that SJC are asked to run the Primary Team Championship on behalf of Chess Scotland. This proposal was agreed unanimously. This means that from this year, there will be a single Championship. To accommodate all school teams there will be mid week and weekend heats which will be arranged once all the entries are in.

To answer Mike's point, yes please continue to use Lothian League Day 1 as your qualifier. Let's get as many schools involved with this and make it an event that we all can be proud of.

We have a prospering Junior scene in Scotland, we are starting to see the fruits of the hard work over the previous years by us all. We also have some very talented youngsters coming through the ranks. The time has now come to put all the differences aside and work together for the good of Junior Chess.

I personnally welcome the fact that there will be a single event.

But I must express my suprise that those who have in previous years argued that there was no problem with the SJC running its own events in competition to the official CS events, are now saying that it is a problem and that it is the official event that should be stopped.

It seems to me that a more inclusive approach - running two events but with a common final - perhaps with a plan to ultimately merge the two being put on the table for discussion - would have been more constructive and would help avoid arguements regarding conflicts of interest.

The way this has been done seems bound to leave those who organised and were involved in the successful CS events in previous years scratching their heads and wondering what they did wrong.

Am I correct in understanding the Primary Team event is being OUTSOURCED to SJC, not ran in CONJUNCTION with SJC? So therefore CS isn't running a primary team event.. but SJC is?
