Time of entry can be a major issue.
When the names are published on the web there is no doubt that strong players attract other strong players. This may also attract others. If these names only appear at the last minute then these additional entries are lost.
Some players will only enter when they think the numbers already entered means that the prize fund will not be cut.
I have known events where a late flurry of entries meant that the control team was one person short as the organiser had been watching the pennies and keeping his expenses to a minimum.
I've even known sets having to be removed from the analysis area because there were no longer enough for the actual tournament. |

GN Said
Quote: | This talk of £2 on/off will not change anyone's behaviour. I was thinking something more like £20 if you enter a month in advance, £30 3-4 weeks in advance and £40 if you enter the week before. |
I like it - no half measures. I do agree if you want to change people's behavior you do need to be radical but a penalty can not be so high has to stop people from entering at all.
How about using an online entry system and charging the first five entrants £5.00, the next 10 £8.00, the next... etc a bit like airlines. Anyone sending in paper form get charged £15.00 or whatever.
You could tailor it so that all duffers like myself pay a surcharge to contribute to GN's prize fund |

*Reminder that there is less than a week until the 1st East Dunbartonshire Congress.*
The draw for round 1 will be made on Friday morning so I would advise anyone wishing to enter to do so before 11pm on Thursday night.

It looks like you have quite a good number of entries going into the last week before your first event Daniel!
Unfortunately I can't play as I will be on holiday, but good luck with it! |

Provisional Round 1 Pairings
Kings
1. Chukwuka Allor (w) v George Glover
2. Alastair Stewart v James Doyle
3. Steve Hilton v Lennart Koehn
4. Daniel Thomas v Ian Marks
5. Michael Grove v Simon Kerridge
6. Peter McEwan v Alan Jelfs
7. Anthony Dunlop v Nihad Abdulla
Jonathan Edwards: 1-pt bye
John McBride: ½-pt bye
Queens
1. Scott Browning (w) v David Brodie
2. Geoffrey White v Murad Abdulla
3. Bernard Cassidy v Alastair Dallas
4. William Walker v Ian Morris
5. Mike Mitchell v Robert MacBeath
6. Advaith Sastry v Gordon Allcock
7. John Pearston v Mark Callaghan
Robert Kelso: 1-pt bye
David Potts: ½-pt bye
Obviously, there may be changes in the event of late entries or withdrawals, but the principle of "minimum disruption" will apply, so that if both players in any of the pairings shown turn up the pairing will not be changed.
The players shown provisionally as having 1-pt byes should still turn up on time, as they will be the first to be paired if there are any late entries. |

Just a thought: can't the two 1 pt byes be paired against each other in a graded friendly? That's what usually happens I think - it would ensure they at least get a game. |

Andrew,
That's what we would do, once we knew everybody was there.
But on this occasion, I've just learned that Mike Mitchell has withdrawn, so Robert Kelso will simply slot into Mike's place in the draw, i.e. board 5 of the Queens event is now:
Robert Kelso (w) v Robert MacBeath
If there are any further changes of personnel I will deal with them in the morning. |

Thought I would wait till the event started here before posting. Just to say that David Congalton and friends connected with the Prestwick congress are very interested in a lot of the ideas being bandied about here regarding entry fee/time/discount etc. I was reminded of this when listening to Radio Scotland today and Bill Leckie said he was once told by a football manager he would rather have 10,000 people paying a fiver each than 5,000 paying a tenner each. Like most tournaments we would like as much quantity with hopefully some quality and therefore all options are being considered as to pricing. One thing you can be certain of, if players remain loyal to supporting Prestwick, they will be rewarded. |

I would liker to thank Daniel and Donald for their help during the tournament. I found the tournament to be most enjoyable but exhausting especially on a Saturday
My congratulations to all the prizewinners |
