Again I picked this up on the ECF.

Title of International Organiser (IO)
Tuesday, 14 June 2011 07:45

The Presidential Board in Al Ain accepted the recommendations of the Events Commission concerning the title of International Organiser. With effect from 1 January 2012, the title of IO shall not be awarded directly upon application. Instead, candidates will be required to attend seminars and to pass the examination. Successful candidates will be awarded the title upon payment of title fee and licence fee (3-years) similar to the systems already in place for trainers.

FIDE urges all national federations to apply for the title for their organisers with the application fee or confirmation that they accept to pay if the title is granted. The deadline shall be 20th July 2011 after which late penalty shall be imposed.

After the Krakow Congress, no direct application shall be accepted.

Ignatius Leong
Chairman, Events Commission

Seems to be yet another income stream for FIDE. Has to be renewed, and paid for, every three years. One cynic on the ECF has already wondered whether titled players will have to pay to retain them.

Seriously though, will this have consequences for Scotland? In particular I am thinking of the 'International Open' status of the Scottish.

Not only has the ECForum been busy - so has my email.

No Scot has the International Organiser IO title because it has not been necessary. At one time FIDE threatened to make it so but decided to accept International Arbiters (IA) instead.

I was again monitoring the situation as the recent 'threat' from FIDE was to charge more for rating if you didn't have an IO. This, however, was not expected and goes against the tradition of giving at least a year's notice.

FIDE are also considering having a registration fee for IAs and FAs too. This was at least presented to me as a way of removing some of the title holders who no longer (if ever) were of a satisfactory standard. Something it is more difficult to argue against.

Certainly as things stand there is no danger to any Scottish events. However, if there is to be a change .....
