Are Graeme Forbes and Andrew MacQueen awake? Is John McNicholl the new recruitment face of Chess Scoland?

The first round seemed to go well, although don't ask me who won or lost. I did miss a request for a half-point bye in the Open, which I hope doesn't create havoc later on. Apologies.

There was also a problem with the lighting which affected part of the Open playing area and as the evening wore on Alan Grant, Ian Marks, Mike Surtees and Ali Roy may have started to find they were having to peer into the gloom as they contemplated their next move. With play due to finish at 6pm today and tomorrow the lighting shouldn't be an issue.

I hope everybody is enjoying the tournament so far and with an influx of "Saturday" players there should be even more of a buzz around the place, although not too loud a buzz in the playing area.

Thanks to David Deary who's help collecting tables and setting up was invaluable and to Robin Moore who also gave a hand.

Thanks also to the four arbiters, Donald Wilson, John McNicholl, Andy Howie and Paul MacDonald. Without these guys there would be no event.

The lighting problem only affected 3 or 4 tables in the Open and only kicked in very late on, this has been resolved and all will be ok today. The venue is getting some very good reports!

congratulations to David and the team of people that supported him. It was a bold move to introduce another tournament to the chess calander. I think from comments i have heard and what I observed on my brief visit on Saturday, that this tournament is here to stay. If the wee niggly things (parking/lighting) can be ironed out then it could be a seriously great tourney.

I enjoyed it. There wasn't much for me to do once the whole thing started. Donald, Andy, Paul and John ran the event smoothly and dealt with any emergencies that occurred.

Thanks to everybody that took part, playing, controlling, visiting, setting up, clearing up, helping out with transport to hotels or home if buses were missed.

I'm already planning next years event, which will be held on the bank holiday weekend, from the 4th to the 6th of May. Hopefully, those that played this year will have enjoyed it and will play again next year.

I would like to congratulate David on the success of the 1st Prestwick Congress. Hopefully the first of many.

The venue was, apart from a small problem with lights, excellent. Comfortable and fairly spacious, although, if as I expect, it grows in size, the airport will have to invest in a lot of new tables.

I must say that I expected a lot of aircraft noise, but the traffic was extremely light, and even the few flights that occurred were not very noisy.

The airport facilities are, to say the least convenient, and surprised me by being less expensive than motorway services. Public transport in the form of buses and trains could not get you closer to any chess event in Scotland, and that includes the Railway Hotel in Perth. (Which has recently re-opened, any chance of a revived congress?)

It also helps my perspective on events that I had a very pleasant weekend results-wise, a massive improvement on the WOS.
