The 4th East Kilbride Weekly Open Chess Tournament updates shall be posted on the Chess Scotland Tournament Notice Board on this page up until the start of the tournament and throughout the tournament.

Now firmly established as Scotland's leading Weekly Open tournament with a Scottish record number of entrants, last year (60).

It shall be held in the usual E.K. chess club venue.

An excellent map, set up by Jim Johnston is available on the E.K. club web page http://ekchess.org.uk/ You can also down load entry forms from there, as well as here on the Chess Scotland home page, under Future Adult Tournaments, (it is also open to juniors currently graded 600 or over).

The Chessbase.com Scottish Grand Prix Swiss Tournament event shall be run as a swiss five round tournament with accelerated pairings in round 1 & 2.

The rounds shall be on Thursday

28th April
12th May
19th May
26th May
2nd June

But not the 5th May, due to the venue being used as an Election Polling station on that date.

I think that anyone who who has played in our venue will recognise it as being possibly the best suited chess club tournament venue in the West of Scotland. It is modern, spacious, bright and disabled friendly. It also has a free car park next to it.

Our aim is to give entrants a top quality run tournament in an excellent venue with modest prize money (a guaranteed minimum £200 prize fund), at a very reasonable entry fee of £15 minus £2 for juniors, CS members and the unwaged.

Adult entrants have access to free tea or coffee, with a biscuit. As children are not allowed access to the kitchen for Health & Safety reasons, they can get a free can of ginger or small bottle of water each week.

Anyone who has played in previous E.K. Weekly Open's or in the sadly gone, excellent Renfrewshire Weekly Open (run by my Congress mentor, the late Walter Munn) or the Cathcart Weekly Open expertly run by Alastair Maxwell, shall appreciate the pleasure of playing in a 5 round Weekly Open tournament, just like playing in a club league match, without needing the stamina of a weekend tournament. Although weekend tournaments like the West of Scotland can be great fun to play in as well.

I look forward to seeing all entrants, just remember that we are limited to 64 entrants (only 4 more than last year's total entry), so I suggest you enter as early as possible.

We are currently sitting at 14, with another 50 spaces, although ten of those are likely to be taken up by E.K. club members.

I shall print the list of entrants, once it has reached 40, with a regular update of the number of spaces that are left to enter.

The closing date is at Midnight on Tuesday 26th April or if we reach the limit of 64 entrants before that time.

Remember that we had a Scottish Chess Record for a Weekly Swiss Open, of 60 entrants, last year.

When the list reaches 40 entrants, I shall put up the list of players on this forum (CS Tournament Chat) as well as the East Kilbride Chess Club web page at http://ekchess.org.uk/

In fairness to everyone, I shall also have a regular countdown of spaces left in the tournament. However I would suggest that if you wish to enter, you are safer to enter early, as it is hard to predict the flow of entries, as the date of the tournament gets nearer.

So with still 8 days to go until the closing date for entries, there are still plenty of space left for anyone who's club has stopped or is about to stop for the summer, and who still fancies a competitive graded game of chess in a first class venue which is centrally located, for most people in the West of Scotland (Strathclyde Area) including Lanarkshire, Glasgow, Ayrshire, Renfrewshire and surrounding areas.

We are still waiting for our first entrants to the new tournament from our friends at Kilmarnock chess club who were regular visitor's to the old E.K. Congress. We even got a smashing new road built, to make it easier to get here. Wink

Everyone is welcome, we will even have a wee (free) cup of tea or coffee ready for you all.

We are three entry's away from the Entrants List going up on both these pages and the East Kilbride Chess Club web site, http://ekchess.org.uk/ This could possibly happen tomorrow night ? once we reach 40 entrants.

27 spaces are still left to fill, which on the face of it, looks quite a lot, but we normally get another five regular from Lanark Chess Club and another 10 - 12 from Hamilton Chess Club, who have yet to enter, plus we still have another 2 - 4 from East Kilbride Chess Club.

So, if you are seriously interested in entering, I would recommend that you don't delay entering for too long. Remembering that we can only accommodate a total of 64 (four more than last years total) entrants, playing in spacious conditions.

I will not sacrifice, entrants, playing space and comfort, by trying to pack in extra entrants, and subsequently reducing the Quality of the tournament.
