Jim Whyte of Concord CC died on March 25 at the age of 83.
John McCartan (Dalmuir Secretary and Dumbarton and District Lge Secretary): "Looking through my Dumbarton and District records I have worked out that Jim played for Dumbarton Chess Club and then started a junior club called Castlehill which he ran for a few years in the Dumbarton league before starting up Concord Chess Club around 1983. As well as playing and being invoved in the organising of these clubs he played for Dalmuir Chess Club in the Glasgow League for several years.
In 1982 the Dumbarton and District Chess Association was invited to take over the running of the Dunbartonshire Open which was a Qualifying tournament for the West of Scotland Championship. Jim was instrumental in finding sponsorship for the subsequent 10 years and sat on the organising committee as well as playing in the tournament."
Jim was a member of Shettleston CC in the 1950s and won the Club Championship in 1956. (DMB)

I am truly saddened to hear of the death of Jim Whyte. I recall him being my first opponent in an open tournament outside of my hometown. He was a true gentleman.
My condolences to his family and to his friends in Chess
