Hello,

I was just wondering about the progress of the Scottish, or if there is any?

Regards
Lynsey

Hi Lynsey,

I'm working on it. Hopefully we will be able to make an announcement in the very near future.

I'm always happy to hear of ideas and am currently looking for a venue for 2011.

I had hoped that I would be able to provide more details about the Scottish by now.

However life is never simple. I am currently in negotiations and hope to be able to make an announcement within the next 10 days.

Arrangements for the Scottish really do need to be carried out 18 months in advance. The resignation of the Home Director last year has caused some difficulties in this respect.

Hopefully we are now well on our way to getting back on an even keel though we will not be talking about an event of the status of last year but should certainly have IM norm opportunities.

Is there a sponsor for this event yet? How much money do you need from a sponsor for an event like this?

There are potentially two sponsors for 2010. Whilst making a significant contribution to the event, neither comes anywhere near covering the economic cost.

Assuming entry fees go to cover prizes, grading/rating and incidentals then a very rough budget for the Scotish would be:

Accommodation £2500
Enhanced prizes £1500
Conditions for titled players £6000
Live Games £500
Promotion £500

So proper sponsorship would require to be in the region of £12000.

Given £20000 we could put on a top class Scottish and for £60000 we could put on an event to rival the London Classic.

Obviously sponsorship packages could be made available eg sponsor the Senior Championship for £250.

If anyone has any potential contacts I will be more than happy to discuss this further with them.

I've heard this 'conditions for titled players' thing before, what actually is that?

Basically if you want to get titled players you often have to offer financial inducements or they will not participate. For an event like this you are talking £2-300 for an IM and £400-£1000 for GMs.

Often players will turn up without incentive for the opportunity to gain a GM norm, this possibility did not seem to attract the Scottish IMs last year.

I am pleased to announce that the Scottish this year will be held on 11th-17th July at the Hamilton Campus of the University of the West Of Scotland (formerly Bell College).

Though over 7 days there will still be 9 rounds (two rounds on Monday and Wednesday). Other events will return to 7 rounds. Play will be 3pm-8pm daily + 9am-2pm for Championship/Open on Monday and Wednesday.

I am sorry for the delay in providing details but organising the event this year has proved particularly challenging, in part due to the change in organiser resulting in a late start in seeking a venue.

Entry forms will be available shortly.
