OK it's a moot point but I have to say I'm fairly dispointed at the
lack of imagination gone into naming the teams in the SNCL.
Division 1 - Hamilton A
Division 2 - Edinburgh 1
Division 3 - Greenwood
Division 4 - Forth Valley
Wow!
I know one or two teams have tried.
Jazz up the names and hit the press with the league tables
we might get more coverage.
The some English teams have made an effort and got into the spirit of things.
Pride and Prejudice
Jutes of Kent
White Rose
S. Wales Dragons
Pandora's Box Grantham (an all girls team)
Poisoned Pawns
Sambuca Sharks
AMCA Dragons
Anglian Avengers
Brown Jack
Celtic Tigers
KJCA Kings
Sambuca Black Sheep
The Full Ponty
AMCA Rhinos
Cambridge Univ. 2
AMCA Hippos
Glos. Gambits
Beauty and the Beasts
Guernsey Mates
AMCA Cheetahs
KJCA Knights
Now a country that has produced Burns, R L Stevenson and The Proclaimers
I'm sure can do better than that.

Are those really names of Chess teams in England? I like the idea, it's a bit like NFL team names. |

They are indeed chess teams in the 4NCL in England. I play for Sambuca Sharks on the odd occasion, hopefully more in the coming seasons.
I vaguely recall playing in a team in the SNCL many moons ago under the teamname of "pawns with attitude" along with other Scottish juniors such as Chris MacDonald.
Suppose we could rename them, but I don't really think it brings a great deal to the league. However if you want to make up names for everyone Geoff, then I can't imagine there will be anyone unhappy to have them used. |

OK. my wee gag.
There is enough imagination around to get themselves nicknamed.
The Hamilton Hackers
Edinburgh = (the Alva Street Aces)
The Greenwood Gambiteers
The Forth Valley Convicted Vicars
Well 3 out of 4 new ones aint too bad. |

Good one Steve;
But how about Chandler's Gay Cavaliers.
Chandler's Gay Cavaliers v The Forth Valley Convicted Vicars.
You would travel miles to the SNCL just to see that go up on the Notice Board.
How could any newspaper refuse that headline.
Gay Cavaliers beat Conviceted Vicars
Amazing scenes at the SNCL last night when Chandler's Gay Cavaliers,
all dressed in pink frilly nighshirts beat The Convicted Vicars 4-0.
Chandler, the gayest of all the Cavaliers, nearly lost on time
putting on his lipstick....
...I've gone to far again haven't I? |

Coming up with some more imaginative names really works.
Last year EK Wanderers won the Dumbarton & District Div 2 title and thanks to our snappy team name (based on the geographical distance from EK to Dunbartonshire) a local EK News article was picked up by Susan Polgar's team;
http://www.ekchess.org.uk/
(and click on the "see Susan Polgar's blog" hyperlink )
This year we have 2 teams in the excellent D&DA leagues which Fraser Taylor and John McCartan run (with the efficiency of a swiss timepiece);
EK Wanderers and the lower ranked EK Rovers (EK Wonderers for the 2nd team was my idea but rejected due to the confusion it would have created for visiting captains and those trying to reschedule fixtures).
Rover and Out was one headline I drummed up when we got beat 4-0 to Bearsden in a D&DA Cup match in November.
If we ever get the 2nd team promoted and they don't stay up then "Rovers Return" is the obvious headline.
We did have one team I was minded to christen the EK Indian's since we struggled to get any of the older players to be chief (captain) - happily it now has a very young chief at the helm who is doing a grand job.
