According to the BBC: FIDE's glorious leader has been talking to his buddy Gaddafi again. Shocked

Quote:
1538: Mr Ilyumzhinov - who used to be governor in the Russian region of Kalmykia - says the call was initiated by Muhammad Gaddafi, one of Col Gaddafi's sons. He says Gaddafi junior told him he was in Tripoli, next to his father. Muhammad Gaddafi also said: "Our forces are kicking the rats out of the city."

1531: "I am alive and healthy, I am in Tripoli and do not intend to leave Libya. Do not believe the lying reports by Western television companies," Interfax quotes Gaddafi as saying.

1529: According to Interfax news agency, that Russian official is Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, president of the international chess federation. He was pictured playing chess with Gaddafi in Libya in June.

1526: Russian official says he spoke to Col Gaddafi by phone, and quotes the Libyan leader as saying he is in Tripoli and will fight to the end - Reuters.

Thoughts?

Personally, I think it is portraying a negative image of chess. It was even worse having to see the pictures of him playing chess with Gaddafi. Surely in his role he should be portraying a positive view of the game? Sometimes I despair! Rolling Eyes

I find it quite uncomfortable that the head of Fide appears to be friends with Gaddafty. I doubt that it will have a decidedly negative effect on Chess in reality, but it certainly won't help.

Yes, how right you are - absolutely shocking. It was much better when prime ministers were meeting him for a shot at his oil reserves. Wink

You're right. I doubt we can accuse Ilyumzhinov of cossying up to Gaddafi for oil. He doesn't have any left. Laughing

So what is his motivation? Any publicity is good publicity? Question

Without knowing too much about it, I would guess that his motivation is rooted in Russian politics and in particular a Medvedev Putin divide.

Any Kremlinologists out there able to comment?

The re-runs of Ilyumzhinov playing chess with a clue-less Gaddafi can't help the image of chess particularly, but I don't believe it makes a material difference. On the other hand, hitching your flag to someone who appears to be going into an ending a piece down doesn't seem to be a particularly astute piece of canvassing for votes next time round.
