Two weeks to go and we have 15 entrants so far. There are only 17 places remaining and those will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Given the limited number of places last minute applications are unlikely to be successful, so if you would like to play please enter sooner rather than later.
Entry forms are available on the Lanark Chess Club web site but a problem prevents us updating the entry list; the updated version can be seen on our entry in the Upcoming Tournaments list on the CS web site. |

Surprisingly, with a week to go, there are still places available for this friendly little tournament. Entries will be accepted up till Friday unless the 32 places are taken before then. Don't leave it too late. |

Ian
Your event was raised under AOCB at East Kilbride's AGM last night.
I believe one EK player has entered already in last week.
Hopefully one or two more may have heeded my "plug" for the Lanark Open and may enter before this evening's deadline.

Thank you. Deadline is being extended until Saturday evening in the certain knowledge that some players will have gone on holiday having forgotten to enter, and will be rushing home at the weekend to get an email to me. |

I would love to have played, but ever increasing fuel costs made it out of reach.
It's getting to the point were even away games are going to be a no no unless things change. No wonder people are out on the streets rioting. To quote an old pal " They are stealing in Ealing, they are looting in Tooting and there all fckn Barking" Vive la Revolution. |

Without intending to hijack this thread... what a load of crap George! The rioting is nothing more than opportunistic criminality, and has nothing to do with economics or anything else. I'd understand this argument if people were looting Asda of bread and milk, but nobody "needs" 50 pairs of designer jeans or a 50'' wide-screen television.
I understand the financial difficulties many are facing, but please don't sympathise with a bunch of criminal losers, who are pretending that they have some kind of legitimate reason for behaving like a bunch of animals, and blaming everyone else for their problems in the process. It's insulting to the millions of good people who work hard for what they have. |

Without intending to hijack this thread, can I suggest that we either have a sub-forum for 'overly simplistic political punditry' or steer clear of it?
EDIT: Sorry Andrew, that's patronising. But things are more complex than simple criminality: without wishing to condone the actions of rioters, it's not a total coincidence a reason this has happened in areas of high unemployment during an economic slump under an extremely unsympathetic government after a black man was shot dead by police under moderately murky circumstances. Explaining's not the same thing as excusing, and if we don't make any effort to do it beyond blaming 'criminality' we're not going to learn anything. |

Well perhaps for some it's politically motivated, but for most it's simply seen as a bit of "fun" and an opportunity to bag a few things that they didn't have before. Blaming the government's approach to cuts and whatnot is just an easy excuse. I don't like the government's approach to things either, but I don't go up to HMV and steal a ton of CDs. |

Anyway really, let's leave this thread alone. If more to say I think we should start another thread. |

Please ignore the draw above, a requirement for another player to take a bye means the pairings need to be redone. If the arbiter is able to do that in the next little while I'll post again. |

Anyone traveling to this tonight from the Edinburgh area should avoid M8 if possible, as there is an accident West-bound around Bathgate. I'm not sure how long it will take to clear. |
