With both teams at full strength, a Scotland - Cowley Chess Club GU18 match would be difficult to call (I'd actually call it in favour of Cowley if played over 4 or 5 boards):

http://grading.bcfservices.org.uk/getclub.php?club=Cowley&sort=2

If such a match did take place, I would probably have to abstain if asked who I was supporting. Smile

Looking at our top 5 I would not be so sure and would fancy our chances

Back to the chess

If my calculations are correct

Glorney
Eng 15.5, Sco 12 Ire 9 Wal 3.5

Faber
Sco 10 IreA 6.5 Eng 5.5 IreB 2

U14
Eng 15 Sco 11.5 Wal 11 Ire 10.5

U 12
Eng 18 Sco 15.5 Ire 8 Wal 6.5

Glorney need to give England a sound thrashing in the morning to win it, Faber need 2 board points from 6 to win. U14 are probably fighting for 2nd and U12 will depend on game V England

Hi All in Scotland (& around the world) from the emerald isle. As usual I found it impossible to get online at the venue & with myself not being a resident onsite didnt get the room access so managed to get on at our Travelodge.

We are so proud of our guys – they are doing really well. This morning’s U12 results were unfortunate but it was equally unfortunate that England matched our score this afternoon of 5.5/.5.
Alexander Bond played a brilliant end game with 6 pawns each & what looked like a draw but with some good tactical play he outplayed his opponent to get the win. Kai’s game was the last to finish of all the Scots this afternoon which he converted from being an exchange down for a long time.

The surprise of the tournament are the Irish Faber (Gilbert Cup)‘B’ team which stood in as Wales were unable to get a team together. This ‘B’ team has caused some upset stealing points from all the other teams including their ‘A’ team. Their board three is only ten years old & definitely one to watch in the future. However, our girls managed to get the full three points from them this afternoon.

Tomorrow morning Scotland will play Ireland in all sections apart from the Faber who will play England so that the two Irish teams have to play each other avoiding any tactical last round scoring in the afternoon.

Irrelevent because they have the opportunity to send their best & if they choose not to its their call - it doesnt mean whoever wins are not champions & it definately doesnt mean that had they sent who they consider their best that they would have won. The point I am trying to make is they wont know because they dont try. My next question is why? Do they not take this event seriously?

The post I was replying to implied that there were no talented girls in the UK outside of Scotland, and included a smiley. I was merely pointing out that there are, in what I hoped was an amusing way, mirroring the hyperbole of the original statement (even including a smiley too).

I replied separately, and enthusiastically, to another post commenting on the current standings and potential outcomes.

On the English Chess forum, threads about English junior selection policy usually run to 20-30 pages and thousands of words. The curious can search the Junior Chess forum on www.ecforum.org.uk I won't post any direct links as inflicting such a thing on the unwary would be equivalent to a blow to the head with a large, slighty rotting, fish.

The implication certainly wasn't to suggest that there were no talented girls in the UK outside of Scotland, as I have the greatest respect for our neighbours and their ability to produce players of an exceptionally high standard. To be beaten by the three girls in the Scottish team would by no means imply that the opposing team were not talented, any more than a Grandmaster beating an International Master means that the IM isn't talented. Our Faber team are perfectly capable of beating other very talented teams, one of them is titled, one is British Girls U16 (Correct Age Range?) Champion, and the other has improved remarkably well in the last year.

It's certainly true that our three girls are three of the most talented girls in the UK, but whether they are actually the 'most' talented or not I don't actually know, my patriotism would like me to believe so.

Very Happy

I love reading the EC board. Slightest issue and you get a 20 page threadnaught

No offence taken from my side at all from your original post - I was happy to continue the banter.

I seem to have develped this curious Oxford-patriotism from having watched juniors making the journey from not knowing how the pieces move to the point where I'm asking them what they think about certain types of positions because I know they understand them better than I do.

Disclaimer: Of course I would be able to learn from the Scottish girls in just the same way (and did so when playing in the same team as Rhian a couple of years ago); I just haven't known them since they were 7. Smile

Quite right Heather. There is enough Codswallop on this notice board already.

Two of the 4 Scottish teams are at full strength, the other two are missing a single first choice player. We must be doing something right to get such a high percentage of invitations accepted

I meant to ask, why did you all get the ferry across. Was that really cheaper than an Edinburgh to Dublin flight, or was there a reason other than cost for it? Cool

Ferry was discounted for bulk booking

Ryan air was possibly cheaper for players but £40 return for a suitcase

&c &c

And unofficially the girls have won the Faber with one round to spare.
