Popped along to catch up with what has been happening.

Daughter gave birth to 3rd Grandson on Friday morning.
(A grandson born on APril Fool's Day - brilliant).

Bought a couple of books from reduced section.
Some classics in there for £1 and £3.

News that Calum McQueen had beaten John Shaw greeted
me as soon as I entered the hall.

Good Game. Snap shots.

C.McQueen - J. Shaw. Edinburgh Premier 2011

After 8...b5

John boiling up the game with a pawn sac to unsettle
White whose King is 3 moves from castling.

After 28...Bc8

John has tossed in another pawn and now has everything pointing
at the King. An uncomfortable position for White when facing a GM.

The moment the boy grew up.

31.hxg4 Qh4+ and Qf2+ is a perpetual.
A draw in round 1 v a GM is a creditable result.
No shame there... and Calum must have seen this postion coming...

After 32...Qxe3

White shunned the draw and landed here.
White to Play. What would you do?

Thanks for the update Geoff! I don't think this is such a big shock anymore, McQueen has been playing very well recently, nice game 8..b5 was a very un-Shaw like move.

Hi J.

Agreed Calum is going through a fine spell, but he is quite chuffed,
he gave me the score of the game.
Your first GM victory is always memorable.

Agree b5 is the kind of thing I would play but John knows what he is doing
and against another opponent it would have had that unsettling effect.

I think I would have allowed the perpetual (and pray he takes it
although he is a piece down), The postion before the exchange sac
is awkward for White and it does appear that allowing the King
to be booted up the board is the way to go.

The idea of seeing my King getting hunted down on a semi open
board by a rabid GM would not have appealed.
