Alan Tate faces the strong Polish GM Mateusz Bartel with black on board 53, while Clement Sreeves has the white pieces vs Italian GM Daniele Vocaturo on board 112. Good luck to them both!

Board 40 sees French GM Sebastian Feller in action, a surprise to those of us who have been following the allegations and 'conviction' of Feller plus compatriots Hauchard and Marzolo for cheating at the last Olympiad.

Feller has been banned from French events for 5 years (2 of these suspended if he agrees to carry out a chess-related 'community service' order!) so it's not clear on what basis he is allowed to compete here.
It will be interesting to see if anyone refuses to play him!?

I see Clement won against a 2564 GM yesterday. Great start. Lets hope we can see some normas from our compatriots in this event. Somehow ALan lost to a 2600+ GM which almost feels like a suprise these days! I am sure there will be better days ahead....

Before getting to the noticeboard I had a quick look at the European results via the link on the homepage

I was impressed by what I think is Clement's first win against a GM, I am sure he has had a couple of draws previously.

It was also pleasing to see that it is now Alan Tate FM.

Rumour has it, Sreeves continued his form today drawing with Jaracz (2565)! Fantastic stuff! Tate also beat his 1900 opponent so they should both get some good games tomorrow...

It's not uncommon that one superb result is followed by another few. It backs up the assertion that having a 'belief' that victory is possible no matter who you play has a significant impact on how well you play, probably by focussing your mind in a more positive way. I'm no expert in psychology but I see the above pattern time and again.

It's great to see Clement doing so well and long may it continue! =D Beating such a strong GM and then drawing with another one is an excellent achievement already!

It would appear that these foreign tournaments are essential for turning 2200's into Grandmasters? =]

Certainly both Scots have not had trouble getting good opponents. Alan has played 5 GMs so far, and all but one of Clement's opponents have been titled.

Both playing IMs in the next round, and both have TPRs above their grading.
