sent to me:
Dear Chess Friends,
Happy New Year!
I would like to inform you about an Open International Tournament I am organising in Italy, 2-10 April, 2011.
Please have a look at www.ravennachessinternational.com.
Please, if at all possible make the information be known to chess players associated to your organisation..
It promises to be an interesting tournament. There are more than ten GMs and a number of IMs which should provide a good opportunity for achieving elo points and norms; the prizes are dissent (1st - 2,500 euro); it could be a pleasant chess experience by the Mediterranean in Italy. A highlight of the event: Judit Polgar will be present and give a simultaneous on 9 April.
Perhaps you could put the information on your website, or use some other way of a mailshot to reach interested players?
With many thanks and hope to see you in Lido Adriano in April.
Kind regards,
Diana Mihjalova (ENG)
PS: If of any use, I am attaching a couple of photos that could serve as adverts. |

Gary Gillespie and I are going to play in this. It's not cheap but is fairly priced for Italy. The hotel owner is a chesslover and has given what we think is a good price for full board accomodation including wine and water at meals. I have also tracked down a relatively cheap transport option. If anyone is interested in this or any info I may be able to help with on playing abroad please feel free to contact me at robinmoore60@btinternet.com.

An Open Letter To God....
Look pal,
You and I have been getting on just fine for the last wee while. I have been trying my best without asking too much in return. Well, the time is nigh to try and balance things oot a bit. What? You didn't think I would try and call in my marker this early? Ok Ok I'm sorry but I really need a wee bit of help starting next weekend. Could you possibly see your way to making sure I don't finish last at Ravenna in Italy in the next fortnight? I'm not asking too much surely. I am only asking you to deal me a good hand occasionally against one of the other diddy players there so that I can come home with my head held moderately high and not have to live like a deeply embarassed hermit in one of the caves on the Ayrshire coast for the forseeable future. Do you know how much it costs to change your name to Robin Moorenil? I even refrained from contributing to the cheating stories request on another link as I could have been there all night from a former life. So how about it? Second last would do just fine. See you later hopefully.

Have you looked at the list of entrants? You should pick up a point or two somewhere and a result against a 2000 player is not beyond you. |

David, thankyou for your confidence booster. I have been counting out the number of likely competitors in this event in the hope there is an odd number and as bottom duffer I would get the bye eventually....yippee! Now to be fair we will be relaxing on the rather upmarket and posing Adriatic coast of Italy. There are bound to be other chessplayers from Europe who think they can get well tanked up on Italian booze and then play to their usual standard. I hope they can't but will wait and see. I reckon if I play my very best I may get a couple of points.

Well, I didn't finish last. I managed to get 4/9 and so did Gary. After the first round the tournament effectively split into two. I thought my 1st round draw was tough (black via 2299) but Gary got an improving young International Master. So after round 1 it was GM,IM,FM,WGM in the top half and RM in the bottom half and that's where I stayed until picking up some points in the second half of the tourney against players of my own standard to come home quite chuffed with myself. Gary got off to a better start than me and faced some really tough opponents. The location, weather, hotel and staff, organisation and friendship among the 72 players of all standards from 27 countries was a joy to be a part of and we thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this wonderful new tournament.
