I was basing what I said on this quote: "...out performed their projected 3 points scoring a total 13.", which suggests a fairly significant outgrading, and a brilliant result, if I am not mistaken? Cool

Truly just wanted to send my congratulations to Glorney and Faber teams on exceptionally strong performances. Both will ofcourse be dissapointed because they have the ability to win!! if everything goes right. We know chess isn't always like that!

Just to clarify though, Ian and Maryann were both selected. We had already planned to take this summer to visit wife's family in Amazon/Brazil. Because of cost and to allow children to have longer time with grandparents we took the whole school holidays for this. I'm posting
this from Manaus,Brazil. We are thankful for the selectors understanding about this. Don't believe them being there would have made any positive difference. Alice i.e has played an exceptional tournament. Lisa has top board result!
Apologies for long winded explanation.

Also think under 14s and under 12s have done very well against very strong opposition and should also be proud of themselves.

best wishes from a 'very hot' Brazil

what is the likely Glorney team in 2012 ? could we set up a training weekend in the autumn for these players ? find some strong tournaments for them to play in and assist with funding ? do they have any games they need looked at by stronger players ?

According to the current grading list it is : Andrew McClement, Ian McDonald, Joanthan Scott, Ali Roy, Shivan Murdochy.

These people should definitely go to a training event and perhaps some others.

You are aware that this has been done and is also planned for next year?

All,

I have been rather busy the last few days and not read the notice board until tonight. I have quoted what I consider to be the most pertinent posting above and then I 'll move on to some other points raised on this board.

Projected score for our U12 team was (courtesy of an Irish PC) 2.9 points from 36 games based upon mean grade of all 4 teams playing (OK a statistical short cut but a reasonable approximation). Their actual score was 13.5/36

I was informed that those opposition players with FIDE grades had national grades with similar values.

I'm sure somebody will do some sums but mentally it look like the U12 team played to grade plus 200 points. Major respect is due to all of the 6 players in that team.

Bottom boards of both the U12 and U14 team both attended squad training sessions held at Hamilton club on the 3 Thursdays previous to the Glorney.
Their score …. 9 points from 12 games. Predicted score approx. 3 points from 12

It would be good to get all the squads exposed that that level of assistance for the month before the event. That is a major undertaking but here I publically thank Tom Donohue for doing 5% of that major undertaking and doing it well.

For older stronger players training is much harder to organise - we need players of higher intrinsic strength with highly developed coaching skills. Which is the rationale behind Jacqui's residential training weekend in September - funding for this comes from Jacqui's well publicised sponsored silence/blitz marathon doubled by the generosity of Barclays her ex employers

Reference strong players going through games. More than once I observed our principal coaches ….. Matthew Turner (GM) Andrew Green and Davis Oswald …working in comparative silence and going through games of three of our players while in another teams room next door one parent sat silently while 4 juniors shouted out stalling one, stalling two, stalling three and occasionally demonstrated an ability to count up to ten.

Andy Muir listed 5 players under 17 who today would make a half decent Glorney team. Given 12 months further development we should be highly competitive again next year (Whether or not those 5 are the final team, I am opposed to picking teams this early).

In summary our elite juniors are on an upwards trend. Helped enormously at this weeks tournament by the thoroughly efficient and professional approach of Jacqui – (especially before the event), by the parents who helped on the self catering front and by impeccably behaved juniors. Speaking from personal experience I hope that the juniors enjoyed the experience as much as the adults did.

Thanks Phil, Jacqui and team, a truly excellent effort by all. Gradewise (and population wise) our only realistic chances of success lay in the Glorney and Faber sections. We were desperately unlucky not to win both of these events and great credit should be given to all concerned. The u14 and u12 performed well above expectations and I feel that must show we are heading in the right direction. Almost everyone must have concerns about the number of adult players competing in an infuriatingly dwindling number of tourneys but green shoots are showing and flourishing in our junior game, let us all support and encourage them in any way we can, our national chess game depends on it.

Robin.

Hmm I sense some skullduggery,

Looking at the results on the crosstable

Scotland 3 - Ireland 4

England 2.5 - Ireland 3

We have 13.5 points,

3+3+2+1+3+2.5 = 14.5 last time I checked

What an afternoon - nail biting stuff on this dry, sunny day - our only one. The players were so gutted not so much that they didnt win but because of the close margins.

Andrew will be the only eligible player next year which is scheduled to be hosted by Ireland.

Prizegiving included prizes for the highest board score by each country within each age group. Ian MacGregor, Rhian Hughes, Lisa Flaherty & Jamie Underwood. Also the highest scorers from the bowling were awarded trophies which Connor being the overall winner won & Ben.

Apart from the annual trophies no trophies were awarded but each player was presented with a 'commemorative coaster'.

Pizza came & went & most didnt get more than a slice for the price we were charged per head good job we stll had plenty food back at the flats.
We tidied our allocated analysis/training room unlike the English room next door to ours & headed back to base.

The youngsters have been playing hide & seek around the campus whilst the older ones have been chilling. We do have a couple off colour but spirits are high.

I'd just like to point out the the coasters are circular in shape; any of this years players selected next year should bring along his/her coaster to play with between rounds.

Yes its going to be a roller coaster experience in 2011.

Above comments from Andy apply to the U12 section only

Which made me look at the Faber results table.

Ireland managed to score 3.5 points in a 3 board match.
Their opponents not surprisingly lost - they only scored 2.5 points

Clarifications

Based upon details given in full results section of this year's Glorney webpage.

All team totals are correct
4 typos in tables summarising match results

From other enquiries I have found 3 typos in the 2nd round match played by the U12 team. True results given from Scottish perspective were

Wins for Alexander Bond and Jamie Underwood
Draws for Stuart Wynne and Murad Abdulla

I don't think anyone would suggest that a team can be picked at this stage but rather a a training or development squad from which the team will be picked can be selected. The selection can be reviewed and players added to it during the season.
