|
|
Most Chess players from the West of Scotland who were playing the Scottish Chess Congress circuit, back in the 90s would probably have played in the East Kilbride Open Congress, which was considered one of the best tournaments at the time.
It attracted Grand Masters such as David Bronstein, Julian Hodgson, Colin McNab, Mark Hebden and Bogdan Lalic, along with Jonathan Rowson and John Shaw who were both IM's at the time. As well as IM's such as Stephen Mannion, Douglas Bryson, Roddy McKay, Mark Condie and various others.
Sadly the Congress came to an abrupt end after 1998, when East Kilbride Council with free parking was replaced by South Lanarkshire Council and parking charges which would have cost entrants £18 for the weekend on top of £800+ we were paying for the venue.
However now, on a much smaller scale, the (3rd) East Kilbride Open Weekly Chess Tournament runs at the Murray Owen Centre with a regular 40+ entrants over a five round swiss tournament.
The Tournament is run on the same values as the E.K. Congress which I (assisted by Tom Brisbane) started back in 1989 and ran for nine years (over a 10 year period). Ian MacKenzie also assisted at the Congress in later years.
Although the prize money is modest (£200 guaranteed prize fund), the tournament is well organized with 2 CS Arbiters (Andy Howie & Peter Devenny), an excellent disabled friendly venue, good value entry fee (£14 less £2 concession), and good quality trophies with keepsake trophies. Also free parking and our original free raffle for non prize winning entrants with two books kindly donated by Chess Suppliers who shall have a book stall on the 3rd June.
One other thing we give you, that the Congress never offered, is as much free tea & coffee as needed, just help yourself. With juniors (who are not allowed in the kitchen for H&S reasons) getting a free can of soft drink or bottle of water each week.
East Kilbride Chess Club would love to see entrants from clubs throughout Lanarkshire, Glasgow, Ayrshire along with anyone else who wishes to enter.
The Tournament runs from Thursday 29th April 2010 for five rounds (missing out the 6th May due to the venue being used for the General Election), through to the 3rd June.
Entry forms can be downloaded from the CS tournament calendar or at http://www.ekchess.org.uk/ along with a map for directions.
Telephone and email entries shall be taken up to midnight on Tuesday 27th April 2010 by phoning me on 01355 610170 or email j.dykes@blueyonder.co.uk with your details and telephone number.
Look forward to seeing you all.

The Entry List now stands at 49 and when the next person has entered, I shall release the entry list on this page, for the 3rd East Kilbride Open Weekly Tournament which starts on Thursday 29th April 2010.
So that people know if they can still enter by the closing date at midnight on Tuesday 27th April 2010, I shall also start a countdown for the remaining 14 entry places, as the tournament is restricted to 64 entrants.
Entrants can email me at j.dykes@blueyonder.co.uk or phone me on 01355 610170 with your details.
I would suggest that it is safer to enter by email or phone, rather than by post, at this stage. If anyone has already posted an entry form in the last few days, can they please contact me by email or phone, to confirm that I have received it.
SO WATCH THIS SPACE.

Please take note that new players shall be listed with the latest countdown number, however new entrants shall also be added to the above list of players which shall be updated each time someone new enters.
This saves writing out a new list each time.
Remember if anyone needs information on the Tournament (or spots any mistakes), please feel free to contact me by phone or email, details as above.
Cheers

Can I remind anyone who is still thinking of entering, that the closing date is tomorrow (Tuesday 27th April 2010) at midnight.
There are still 9 entry places left.
Email entries to j.dykes@blueyonder.co.uk or Phone 01355 610170 up to midnight.
Still no entries from various local clubs such as Kilmarnock CC, Cathcart CC, Phones CC, or Polytechnic CC.
All these clubs used to be represented at the old E.K Open Congress, so it would be great to see at least one person from each club play in the 3rd East Kilbride Open Weekly Tournament.
Cheers

There was a problem with my telephone earlier, thanks to a sky engineer who was working on my Sky+ box, if anyone was getting an engaged signal.
However the phone is up and running again.
Cheers

We have had one entrant who has had to withdraw, from the Tournament.
So we now stand at 55 entrants
There are 9 places still available
REMEMBER THE CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES IS MIDNIGHT TONIGHT (27th April) !
So even if your chess is rubbish just now, at least you get as much free tea & coffee as you need at the Tournament. Non prize winning entrants can also win a prize in our free raffle at the end of the tournament for two book prizes courtesy of Peter & Ann Woods of Chess Suppliers, who shall have a bookstall at the Tournament on the 3rd June.
So why not join us on the 29th April at one of the very best chess venues in Scotland for one of the best weekly tournaments in Scotland.
Enter by email at j.dykes@blueyonder.co.uk or phone me on 01355 610170 up to midnight.
Remember in years to come you can always tell your Grandchildren you won a prize at the 3rd East Kilbride Open Weekly Chess Tournament. You don't need to mention it was in a free raffle.
Look forward to seeing you there.

There is still 9 places left in the Tournament and 3 hours left to enter.
There is a healthy 55 entries, 10 up on last year. 2 non E.K. players, up on last year, which is where the prize money and keepsake Trophy money, Free Tea & Coffee ect comes from.
With the E.K. players club subscription paying for the venue at over £35 per night.

I have just noticed that the CS clock is one hour out and has not been changed for British summer time. So when I said 3 hrs left, it was actually 4 hours left to enter.
So to make up for the mistake, the entry lines (email & telephone) shall be open until 1am Wednesday 28th April 2010.
The entries are now 56 with 8 places left. The latest entry at 11.45pm is
Gary McPheator 1691 Prestwick
Still time to contact me.
Cheers

Entry Closing Date Extended
By popular demand, I have been persuaded to extend the closing date by 24 hours to midnight on Wednesday 28th April 2010.
The entries now stand at 57 with 7 places still left.
Apparently a possible Scottish Record for a non allegro weekly Open Tournament.
So why not take this opportunity to join us by email at j.dykes@blueyonder.co.uk or by phoning 01355 610170 and leaving a message and contact number.
Late entries may have to accept a 1 point bye in Round 1, if we cannot match you up with an even player by midnight tonight (28th April 2010).
The final decision shall be in the hands of our Chief Arbiter, Andy Howie.
The 57th entry is Ciaran Jenkins 744 J11 Hamilton cc
The latest Provisional 1st Round draw can be seen at the following link.
http://www.sncl.org.uk/sites/ek/EKOpen2010/SMWSite/index.html
So why not come and join us in one of the final Chess Tournaments of the season.
Cheers
