Andy,

Great EK Open Round 1 report on http://www.ekchess.org.uk/

and glad you included my photos of the hall near the end of the night... all those top boards still playing when the lower boards had finished.

What's going on there??

The answer is simple and its a pattern repeated throughout the chess world.

Almost all strong players take care over the majority of their moves and taking care takes time ...... many lower rated players don't;

http://www.chesscafe.com/text/heisman107.pdf

When I looked around the hall on Thurs night ... it was a carbon copy of the picture of the Novice Nook article above.

As Dan says... he looks to see if one of the people he coaches is trying their hardest by the time they used for each move (which he gets them to record each game) and by the total time they have used with his view that if you are trying your hardest then in most games you will use almost all your time

mind you despite this "lecture" from me on players taking their time, it probably makes the last game in Andy's report - Vivek Pathi's win all the more impressive

PD
