I wonder if Geoff Chandler has seen this
http://info-wars.org/2009/12/28/the-irish-invented-chess-i-kid-you-not/

So the Lewis Chessmen are really Irish and probably were washed ashore from Ireland after a storm at sea.

These facts cannot be disputed, to be sure, to be sure.

This is all old stuff and is now re-surfacing because the BM has
all but admitted that they are NOT chess pieces.

It has taken them 150 years to admit they were wrong.

The game the Irish lads were playing was a form of the Viking game.

(Time to design a new logo for Chess Scotland I'm thinking).

Forrest, who if you are keeping abreast of things, sold the original
pieces to the BM. Spent 3 years in Ireland from 1822-1825.

He approsched The Society of Antiquaries in 1826 claiming he had
treasure from Bonnie Prince Charlie....he was told to get lost.

He pops again when the Edinburgh-London match had finished
claiming this time they were chess pieces.

He could have got them from Ireland. I can place him in Ireland.
He never set foot on Lewis.

You have to get away from the Lewis connection.
There is not one shred of evidence they came from Lewis.
It's a myth invented by a convicted con-man.

Interestingly, the first quote in the article clearly describes the method of capture in Hnefatafl, not that of chess.

(Seriously this time!)

In fact, having bothered to read the whole article, there is nothing in any of the quotes that would point at chess being discussed rather than the Scandinavian Hnefatafl-type games, whereas there are a few parts that indicate the converse.

The bit about the king being in the middle of the board surrounded by his territory and his men is clearly talking about these sort of games.
