|
|
| I have been using Googlepages for the Wandering Dragons but they are replacing this with Google sites. The new product does not support html or css so isn't really much use. At the same time lots of other free providers such as Yahoo Geo cities are packing in as well. Does anyone know of a free or very low cost provider that will support a simple set of html and css pages - sophisticated stuff like php and databases or email addresses are not needed? |

If you want to have a free website, switch your internet provider to Utility warehouse by contacting either Jacqui Thomas or myself.
The Hamilton Chess Club website is on the free space I get as a UW customer, have a look at itt.

| Thanks for your reply. I don't want to change my ISP since I have just paid. I had a look at your web-site and I cannot tell - there are no games or tables of results etc. I had a look at the underlying code and it is full of java-script. I prefer not to use scripts because they can contain viruses etc. I noticed, too, that your css is inline - I prefer it in separate files so that it does not clutter up the html. You have given me an idea- I will look at other chess-club sites and see if I can identify who is hosting them if I like the look of them. |

I would have suggested to use the webspace your isp provides, but looking at who your ISP I now understand.
Personally I would move to something that gives me what I want, even *gulp* teleworst gave you webspace!
There are some very good isp's out there, and not all are at a premium price |

www.110mb.com
That offers free hosting and you can add MySQL etc modules for quite low one off charges if required.
Used it for the www.lawsocietychess.org.uk site and I think the SJCA Ed. Trust is there as well.
I did have a period when there was alot of down times but since then it has been fine (Ithink!) |

Admin. You are quite right - I got into demon in the days of dial-up when they wre about the only isp around that was any good. When I switched to broadband I stayed with them because they had been (and still are) very reliable and I wanted to keep my same email address. However they stopped providing web-space so I moved that to Google and now Google are changing (Google might still be alright for most things but who can tell until they change). I intend to look at changing my ISP when my current contract ends.
Mike. 110mb looks interesting. I intended to have a good look to see if this will do.
Now. I am off to watch Andy Murray play tennis.
Rather than add another post I thought I would just add to my last one to say that, for now, I am going with the suggested site 110mb but, ultimately, we are thinking of hosting our own site. I would like to thank everyone for their replies and this shows the value of this bulletin board - that we can all help each other out. |
