Folks,
Just a reminder that the WoS has changed dates and format. The West of Scotland will run on Saturday the 7th, and Sunday the 8th of June. There will be no Friday evening session (apologies to some but it's maybe good news for others) so there will be 3 rounds on the Saturday and 2 rounds on the Sunday. The venue is really very good with ample car parking (free!) and an on-site cafeteria/bistro. Entry forms are available on-line from the CS Callendar.

Travel directions to the WoS:
Next Generation Sports Centre, Netherton Rd.
(There is a lot of new housing in this area, making use of the canal-side location, so maps may be out of date. Also, some streets are cul-de-sacs).
By car: At Anniesland Cross, head North (Bearsden/Aberfoyle), on Bearsden Rd. Travel about 350 yards. Left at the lights into Fulton St. (This is before the Shell Garage).
Right at the next lights (150 yards) into Spencer St , which leads in to Netherton Rd. The Next Generation Club is on your right, in Netherton Rd.
By bus: No 118 from Buchanan St. Half-hourly. Recommend 9:10 from Buchanan St. Takes approx 30 mins to reach stop off point on Bearsden Rd.
(Simplest to head along Fulton St + Spencer Rd, see above, although no doubt there is a shorter pedestrian route). Check for return pick up point!
By train: Anniesland Stn is OK but it is a bit of a hike uphill from there.
Rather closer, and much more pleasant, is the walk from Westerton Stn.
Westerton is on the route to several different destinations; e.g Helensburgh, Dalmuir, Balloch, Milngavie (so there are frequent trains, from both Queen St and Central)
From Westerton, cross the bridge over the tracks. Turn left and walk ( i.e., back along the direction you came ) along the Forth & Clyde canal towpath - this takes you directly to the back of the venue (the outdoor swimming pool and the tennis courts are unmissable!). At that point, turn down the narrow lane, which brings you to the front entrance of the venue. The walk is about 10 minutes or so.
Alternatively, (if you must walk on concrete!) from Westerton station, cross over the tracks and proceed along the streets below the canal. Need to bear left at every junction, so as to follow as closely as possible the line of the canal which is to your left. ( A light industrial park behind the houses on your left blocks a more direct route). At the mini-roundabout go straight ahead and the venue shortly comes into view. This route takes a bit longer.

The Premier section is begining to take shape with a number of 2000-2300 players already entered. As yet no IMs have entered but...there is still a day or so to go! The Challengers and Major could be easier pickings for keen middlegrade players to notch up some more grading points before the grading deadline |

For those seeking Grand Prix points - it is double points this weekend.
The only other double point events left this season are Hawick and the Scottish Championships (Adults and Juniors). |

This might be worth checking. Unless something has changed the new season usually begins with the Scottish. If I am right then the Scottish in 2008 counts for 2008/9 for grading and grand prix. |

That's right, Scottish is first event of 2008-2009 grading and GP season.
Just like Cumbernauld Scottish was first event of this 2007-2008 season. |

My mistake - I had thought that the Scottish counted as the last event of one season and as the first event of the next.
I was wrong. But perhaps we should change it to my misconception - as a a way to encourage more entries to the most important event on the Scottish calendar. |

July 1 was chosen as the grading cut-off (and thereby GP cut off) since July is relatively quiet apart from the Scottish. July is the month when grading data is checked, G-List created, with publication of new grades fixed for August 1.
If the Scottish was to be the final event of the season then you would need to move the cut-off to August 1 with checking throughout August with an official publication on Sep 1.
The Scottish as the final event for GP may be an exciting finale for those in GP contention - but strictly in terms of numbers the event is of more use as a point-scorer to more players at the start of a season when everyone is involved.
If GP prize presentation was to continue at the Scottish you would also need the grading data to be created instantly and the GP charts to be updated live on that final day.
>>>I had thought that the Scottish counted as the last event of one season and as the first event of the next.
Not sure what you mean - processed for grading and GP twice? Once in each season. |

I actually meant twice for GP and once for grading.
But your idea of processing twice for grading is an interesting one.
Pedantically speaking - GP final places can be calculated before processing the grading data - for each competitor a single addition only to the GP points in force at the start of the Scottish. |
