OK..not quite what happened, but it felt like that! Shocked

Richardson Cup
==========
Edinburgh Civil Service 2 - 4 Dundee Victoria

Glad to report that Dundee are worthy victors in a hard fought fixture in which they gave their much lower rated opponents due respect in a hard fought entertaining match. 4 tough draws and two wins decided the match.

Many have poo-pooed the attempt to revitalize the Spens Cup as a merged first round with the Richardson Cup but I for one enjoyed the chance to get a game against the big guns - can only learn and improve ones own game. Hopefully Dundee did not find the difference in grading too much of a problem. Most impressed that Dundee played a GM on board one - just in case - Laughing

As for the subject, the ever wily Mr. Austin managed to sacrifice material when losing to reach a position where his rook could check the opponent king such that it could not be taken otherwise a stalemate would be the outcome. Most observers considered this a forced stalemate, but Colin McNab, the Dundee board one, quickly spotted a subtle forced win avoiding the stalemate! This was not spotted by the players and eventually a draw was agreed, although if either side had bothered to write the moved down in the closing stages then a draw by the 50-move rule could have been claimed.

Belongs in an endgame puzzle book!

Good luck to Dundee in the next round.
