Edinburgh (Filmhouse) 15 July – 28 July
Glasgow (GFT) 15 July - 17 July
Stirling (Macrobert Centre) 25 Aug

This is an opportunity for some enterprising soul(s) to raise the profile of chess in their local area.

Castlehill and Dundee & Victoria will be arranging some kind if mini chess event on the premises of DCA to do just this. DCA are themselves keen for some publicity for this film and for local chess

I have got The Scottish Championships appearing in Edinburgh
at the same time will that do?

I'll pop into the cinema and see if I can score cut rates for the
evening perfomance on the first and second night.

I am working 4pm - midnight on the 15th and 16th and don't
have a hope in hell of a swap, I work besides these yongsters who
live for Friday and Saturday nights, but I'll be there on Sunday night.

I'm 60 today. Just sent off my application for a bus pass.

Happy birthday!

I'm coming up from Stoke to play in the weekend open and I'm hoping to see the film either on the Saturday or the Sunday.

I'm not going unless:

    the first ten rows of seats are removed from the auditorium;
    the lighting is improved;
my personal black leather swivel chair is flown in from New York
Twisted Evil

Happy birthday Geoff Smile

I went along to the Filmhouse and they may be up for a private
showing for those playing in the congress and all local chess players
on the morning of Thursday 14th July (approx 10.00am - finish at noon).

It all depends on the interest and permission from the distributors.
I'll see how many names I can by the evening of Monday 10th July.
Price will be approx £4.00. It is £7.50 for the evening showing.

Be good to have the place full of nothing but chess players.

Am also trying to get another company to stump up £25 as brillo prize.
Waiting on the reoly.

For DCA Dundee's part they are offering as prizes for our mini-event:

Quote:
The distributors are donating a film poster signed by Nigel Short as a prize, and we could add in two free tickets to the film as well. We'll also be able to offer everyone who takes part a discount on tickets. We might be able to create some Bobby Fischer badges instead of medals too

The signed poster is surely enough to get the crowds flocking in.

Can you get the press involved Geoff? DCA are going to try some heavy local promotion - and as they are an arm of the City Council they should get it.

Any thoughts on whether this film might actually damage the image of Chess, instead of promote it? It almost seems to imply that working hard in Chess will have serious consequences for your mental health?

If I can get enough interest shown I'm sure this will work.
I'll be emailing all the clubs so they get in touch with their members.

I reckon they will give the chess players a private showing
if I can guarentee 100. Their PR machine will kick in so the
papers will should send along a reporter.

Then of course on my signal we cause a riot, smash up
the place, rip the seats out and sing sectarian songs.
This will make the television.

That's right, though, isn't it?

Witness Robbie Coltrane in Lead Balloon this week as hostage taking prisoner who just wants a chess set in his cell. Or on Monday in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" there was Russell Brand demonstrating sexual technique using life size chess pieces to help the sad chess playing guy who doesn't know how to make his new bride happy. Last night in "The Contract" we saw the bad guy murdering assasin stop to make a move in his internet chess game before resuming chase for John Cusack and co. Jeez ....that's only this week.

Then there was the psycho killer chess player in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The list goes on I'm sure.

Generally playing chess is firmly in the wierdo category with the general public and maybe for good reason?!

Eh? Steve McQueen / Faye Dunaway in the Thomas Crown Affair and a long list of exceptions though that one remains one of THE iconic cinematic seduction scenes! There are weirdos in any sport. Even John McEnroe commenting at Wimbledon is clearly in awe of Bobby Fischer ... he went on and on during one match about just how awesome he was at the game ... and he wasn't remotely thinking weirdo!!

This one is always quoted but I can't help feeling the negative examples are in the majority. Truly I have been struck how almost every night this week when I have switched on the tellie there is a bad guy in front of a chess board. It's sad but true I think.

Also worth keeping in mind how the chess board was dropped from the remake of TCA - sign of the times maybe?

Nope - only bad guys and wierdos play chess (plus myself but of course but that's different Wink )

***EDIT*** Almost forgot Gaddaffi and Ilyuzhimov on News at 10 a few weeks back. Talk about reinforcing the steriotype. It's no wonder there's no sponsorship these days.

Sadly, I think George is telling it how it is. We all know that most chess players are the most erudite, charming and rational of individuals, but that's not of any interest to the media- dysfunctional oddballs are easier to stereotype.

I will be astonished, albeit very pleasantly astonished, if the great Bobby is given a sympathetic homage to genius in this one.

Now certainly in the past an air of sophistication and hi-intellect, with nothing worse than vague eccentricity was attributed in screen chessplayers, a sort of flawed genius if you like. But if I remember correctly, even in some of the great old classics, like FRWL, wasn't agent Kronsteen a brainwashed baddie?
