Just home from a very enjoyable event. We had excellent team spirit and there were no selection issues with the daily line ups being agreed by us all (although maybe 4 players is easier!). Craig had a marvellous tournament and debutant senior Douglas had a fine score on fourth board. Considering that we met 3 of the top 4 teams, and 4 of top seeded 7, it was difficult this time to finish better than our official seeding (of 12th). It is hard work playing every day - and even harder, when watching!
I had six really fascinating games, with some inevitable inaccuracies, but I enjoyed both of my wins and coming close against Italy and Montenegro - and missing a good chance against the Russian. I will annotate them in due course and write some comments on my personal experience of playing - as the most elderly member of the team Many thanks for the kind remarks! |

Can I also add my thanks, too, to Alan's, for everyone's kind comments. The team performed above rating expectation and competed well. As captain, I'd like to congratulate all our players.
Peter ended with a superb win v Montenegro. It was unfortunate that he suffered from playing rust earlier on and dropped at least two points in winning or near winning positions due to unfortunate, wholly untypical blunders. He remains an extremely busy wind energy engineer. I got the prize for the best score on Board 1. Douglas just missed out on this on the reserve board to GM Kraidman, who scored 6.5/7. Both Alan and Alastair also played very valuable parts, too, in what was another fine team effort. We are certainly not regarded as pushovers by anyone in this tournament! |
