Phil mentioned,

Quote:
Angus has already agreed to coordinate Scotland's participation at Mureck in Austria - the EU youth championships .
Last year was the first time that Scotland was represented at this event.

Scotland did have 3 strong representatives at Mureck in 2004 and I seem to recall other years allthough I could be mistaken.

England have regularly managed to get sizeable teams to this EEC Youth Chess Championships.

There will be a selection process designed at giving opportunities to those who may be very close to selection, but unable to be selected, for the Euro Youth and possibly World Youth if Scotland sends a team.

Dates for this tournament are down on the FIDE website as
EU Youth Championships 2011 Mureck, Austria 2-Aug-2011 11-Aug-2011

There are tournaments at under 8, under 10, under 12 and under 14 level.

Usually each federation is entitled to 1 free accomodation representaive at each age group and boys and girls play in the same section but with different titles.
Any parent wishing to express an interest in their child attending can do so by mailing me at gusmacw@yahoo.co.uk with the understanding that the free 1st places will be awarded to the most meritorious candidate as decided by the selectors appointed. I would also like to take additional players where parents are happy to pay for their child's participation and their playing strength is sufficient for them to enjoy the event.
More information early in the New Year about likely costs. I expect the selection process and organisational work for the tournament to start in the Spring.

regards,

Angus McDonald

Angus,

I hope you don't mind, I split this from the Liverpool thread as there is information in it that it quite important and I didn't want it lost in that thread

Angus, what are the cut-off dates for the age groups and is there likely to be coaching support?

Andy,
Putting a sticky up is fine as the dates may be interesting to some Chess Scotland members, parents and juniors. I don't intend starting the real organising on this until spring and I have just put up some details as it was mentioned in the other thread.

Derek,

The cut off dates are 1st January 2011. So if child is under the agegroup on that date they are eligible. I would hope to take at least 1 coach. Depending on size of party that coach may also be the squad leader.
Making the opportunity as accessable to as many of the talented youngsters as possible will be a priority so I will look to keep costs down. I will put up some details on likely costs early in the new year.
The party could I envisage be from 5 to up to around 16 depending on interest. A party of 5 would be 1 coach and 1 player at each agegroup with accomodation paid.
regards,
Angus

Update on Mureck.

I will be travelling to Mureck with the squad.
Angus will be in Brazil for the World Youth later in the year.

So we took the pragmatic decison that Angus would do most of the WorldYouth work and I would take over Mureck admin.

A selection panel including Angus and myself invited these 4 players to take up the free accommodation places in Mureck.

U8 Vagif Ramazanov
U10 Liam Richmond
U12 Colin Howie
U14 Ben He

Additional players joining the party under their own steam are Matthew Thomas, Andrew McCusker, and Kirsty McCusker.

With 4 months to go until the event there is still time for other juniors on the verge of international selction to join the group going to Mureck. They would have to be self funded.

Any players interested in going to Brazil, who have not yet expressed an interest should contact Angus.

As always at these events time is short. On this occasion internet access is restricted to playing hours.

I can report that all party are fit and well (with possible exception of Matthew's right leg).

I do so because there are rumours circulating locally of a British youth on a bike involved in an accident. If confirmed our party was not involved.

Nor the Irish who are at our hotel.
