I don’t want to muddy Alex McF’s research waters but Dundee congress’ venue (David Lloyd Leisure) is available next year for - IMO - a very attractive (i.e. low) cost. The availability includes flexibility for the event format – 9-day or 7-day, with or without a weekend for congress-format tournaments. All the facilities and ‘enhancements’ available to players at the Dundee Congress would be available to the Scottish.
Want somewhere for the family to entertain themselves for a week? Angus, Dundee and surrounds are stuffed with history, sports facilities, culture, leisure, blue-flag beach.
Accommodation? I believe I could cut a deal with one of the nearby PTIs (as I have for the upcoming Dundee congress); nearby Broughty Ferry has plenty of B&Bs; Monifieth has 2 caravan/camping parks, including holiday homes for hire. And there’s much more not far away.
More reasons? Several, but let’s see if there’s support for this venue.
The main drawback (the only drawback?) is that it is 15 minutes from Dundee bus and train stations. Is that too much?

This venue would definitely get my support. When was Scottish last in Dundee I wonder? Must be long overdue a visit!
On a personal level Heriot Watt would be fine for me too. |
Agreed, for me this is a nice holiday: chess in the mornings/mid-afternoons, tennis in the evenings. |

According to the list of Scottish Champions the Scottish was last held in Dundee in 1976.

Additionally, the 1993 British was in Dundee. _________________ "Heather's clever book". As plugged* by the Rampant Chess Team. |

Lyns,
As far as the business model goes - I guess that I would suggest that congresses make a bid and the one (or ones) making the best bid (note: this need not necessarily be the highest bid in terms of revenue to CS, rather playing conditions, prizes, etc). If congresses want to share a two stage event then it would be down to them to decide how income would be shared etc. Sure, spreading an event over two weekends will increase the chance that some people cannot make it but if it allows for more games or 1 game a day it might attract more players. |

Thanks Heather. I thought the Scottish had been held in Dundee since 1976 and was confused when I looked at the list but I must have been thinking of the British.

I vote for Dundee for the Scottish Chess Championships 2011 along with special side event of Chess Scotland Tennis Championship. That should make David Lloyd happy. I'll enter the over 50 for the Chess though:-)
Trying to be on topic! I see Dundee Victoria player Peter Constantinou is going well at the British looking drawn against GM Simon Williams in round 5 live games. Or is there anothe Peter Constantinou? |

It is the same player, not sure if he is still playing for Dundee though, didn't play any games in the SNCL last season. |

While we are on the subject of the British has anyone been following the games of Jack Rudd, not sure if I have ever seen anything like it.
Round 1 GM Arkell leaves his queen en-prise to a 1 mover, has to be the single worst move I have ever seen.
Round 2 and 3 he destroys Greet and Williams using less than 15 mins on his clock, infact I think he had more time on his clock at the end of the game than when he started! The game against Williams was very impressive, although Williams did play an extremely dodgy looking piece sac.
Then rounds 4 and 5 loses two horrible games in 20 odd moves, using no time on his clock whatsoever. Anyone can lose to Adams of course, but I think going in to the game and trying to blitz him is a bit disrespectful! Todays game against Houska was by anyones standards pretty shocking.
Maybe it is just his style to play on auto-pilot, but there has to be a balance surely. |

Jack has always played like that, it is his style. He is very hard working and needs to be busy all the time. He is often to be found inputting games in between his very quick games.
He has been diagnosed with autism, which explains why he sees things differently to other people. I am sure he does not see it as disrespectful, I think that he concentrates better when playing quicker. Less time to get bored, sometimes it pays off and some times not. |

His games are always very enjoyable to watch. |

Looks like it might have been a 50 move draw in the Constantinou game? |

Less than 20 moves since last pawn move, I guess they got fed up of fruitless bishop moves. |

GM Arkell v Salimbeni has just finished as a draw. After about 8 hours, and 160 moves, it was a draw because of the 50 move rule.
Arkell has a deserved reputation for grinding down opponents, and that certainly was a grind. I wonder which member(s) of the control team had to sit about for that. They must have been playing on the 30 secs per move for rather a long time, the clocks were not showing from the start. |
