The WEST has been processed for Grand Prix with a multiplier of 1.

Earlier this season it was made a requirement that a minimum of 50 players in total at a congress qualified for double points in a weekender. http://www.chessscotland.com/csinfo/gpintro.htm

West was 49.

Maybe there should be 3 categories - large weekender 3*, small w/e and one day a week 2*, one day allegros 1*.

Or does that devalue allegros too much which can sometimes be bigger events than some weekenders.

Other suggestions recd have been should switch to BEST 8 rather than current BEST 10. Would that annoy the hardcore w/e crowd who rack up all the events.

Not "penalising" anyone - simply applying the published rule.

These rules are not set in stone but the level of feedback you get to any queries on what the rules should be is not high.

What should the rule say then - take account of number of withdrawals - how could that be applied in practice?

Or should there not be a 50 limit at all on weekend events? So a 20 player mini event is same value as Edinburgh Congress.

Is it easier to score 5/5 in a 6 player all play all, or in a 100 swiss? The games are just as hard. I think that it is easier to score a higher percentage with more players to hide you from the best players.

Maybe all tournaments should score the same. Instead there could be a quota, for example, of five long play and three quickplay results in an eight event grand prix.

Just an idea to add to the mix. I am sure other people have their own ideas.

The Grand Prix introduction gives

1. Purpose To stimulate the development of the tournament circuit. To provide another benefit for Chess Scotland members who play chess regularly.

To that end, my opinion is that all tournaments should be ranked the same, regardless of the type of event.

The 50 minimum rule does penalise those who play in smaller events and doesn't help such events attract more entrants. I would argue it has the opposite effect, the rule encouraging players to play only established, well supported events if they are chasing grand prix points.

I also agree with John that it is easier to hide in a large pack and gain better results than in a small one.

For the same sorts of reasons, I would also be oppossed to reducing the number of best events.

For what it is worth...

As someone who is chasing GP points I have to say I am rather irrate with this ridiculous rule. Over the sake of 1 entry I am getting half the points I should be in the GP?

I played in a 7 person allegro field (with no grading limit) at the Irvine CFK and that earnt me 5 GP points and yet I have only gained 3.5 GP points from a 22 person Major (U1750). Pull the other one... if its down to tournament size then how do we explain that. What a load of crap! I don't want to say anymore without offending anyone.

The word farcical springs to mind but then anything is possible where it concerns chess in Scotland. There should be common sense or a tolerance applied to the 50 competitor rule. Rolling Eyes

On the procedural issues of counting all tournaments the same. I am not in favour of that as I think the weekend Congresses are the top events over 3 days usually and by and large involves 15 hours of chess played (roughly) whereas in an allegro its 1 day and lucky if its 5 hours of chess. To count them the same would be unthinkable.

We used to get the results of comps soon afterwards because the kind controllers put them on the front page - do we now have to hunt for them in the noticebd? Shocked
