|

The ECF president recently suggested that CS had decided to vote for Karpov on the ECF forum. Is this correct?
I'm probably minded to consider Karpov is better than Ilyumzhinov, although I'm not sure that he really has won all the arguments on the strength of what's available so far on his campaigning website.
However, the curious situation arises that FIDE rules apparently disallow an incumbent president to run if his federation favours an alternative (Karpov and Ilyumzhinov are both Russians). So instead of a proper electoral battle between the two, it may be that Ilyumzhinov may have to withdraw if the Russians (who seem highly split on this) eventually confirm their current, if precarious majority vote taken over the weekend in favour of Karpov.
So could I suggest that Chess Scotland, in addition to voting for the presidential candidate of their choice, either put forward a second motion that allows the above anomaly to be dealt with in future or supports others (possibly within the ECU), who may already be doing this.
This must surely be fairly easy to frame. Thus, FIDE could enshrine a right for any incumbent FIDE president to run (period), while all member federations can propose (one) alternative. |

I am wondering what is process for how CS determines which candidate we support? Is this a board vote? Should it be an AGM/EGM matter I wonder?
Either way, this is not an easy choice.
Perhaps next time aliens appear to Ilyumzhinov they will take him away with them and save us all the bother of having to make this difficult choice |

Well they both end in "ov" so I don't see what difference it makes. |

I personally think it is an easy choice. You have the guy who talks to alians, whose driver and bodyguard are in prison for murdering one of his political irritants, and has taken chess from big cultural centres to be played in the outskirts of poor republic for private money with a time control none of the strong players like.
Then you have the other guy, who by the way has quite a lot of political experience and private funding too, and on top of this a great reputation as a diplomatic person. |
