PostPosted: Wed Feb 11, 2009 10:38 pm    Post subject: Selections - Initial Reply with quote

Initial Selections for the Glorney/Faber/ Trinations are listed below. The event takes place from July 21 to July 24 in Glasgow

These selections have been confirmed with the other junior board members.

Later the junior board will meet to discuss the remaining selections. This meeting has not been scheduled but is unlikely to happen before the end of March.

As before there has to be a deadline for acceptance. In this case I consider 32 days should be sufficient. Which takes us to March 15th.

Please note that I have not attempted to contact all parents/invitees in advance of this posting. I will endeavour to contact all families by e mail within the next few days. Cost of the event should be (99% certain) less than the £125 charged for the event in 2008 (Liverpool).

Glorney (5 boards)
Andrew McClement
Daniel Rocks
Clement Sreeves
Connor Woods

Faber (3 boards)
Rhian Hughes
Amy Officer
Ali Roy

U14 (6 Boards)
Ian McDonald
Shivan Murdochy
Jonny Scott
Daniel Thomas

U12 (6Boards)
Gordon Clark
Ben He
Kiron Roy
Peter Sanders

Long time since I posted on the topic. With a prestige international tournament of this size there is much to do requiring input from many people apart from myself. Details and possible alternatives don't get published. Summaries do.

Most of the tournament details have now been finalised

I would like to see this thread to used as a public information conduit to keep the readers informed. Not for debate about alternative strategies. Heckle and criticise if you like but please use another thread and don't hijack this one.

Andy could you transfer out most of the earlier postings to another thread to reduce this sticky thread to a more suitable size

Arbiter team can now be confirmed

Alex MacFarlane
Andy Howie
Donald Wilson
Michael Hanley
Phil Thomas

These should be familiar names from the regular chess circuit. Very very brief biographies follow.

Alex is the main arbiter in the UK's premier event the British Championship proper. Hence he will be the chief arbiter.

Andy is one of the most active arbiters in both junior and adult events. He is close to achieving Fide Arbiter Status.

Donald is president of chess Scotland and retains a keen interest in junior chess

Michael tournament directs junior events on around 50% of all weekends, and nearly always acts as arbiter on the day.

Phil mainly does junior events these days. There is a rumour not started by me that I'm working towards Fide arbiter status. I haven't actually controlled a Fide rated event since London U21 events at the start of this decade.

1) I was told the tournament is fide rated, hence the time controls must work according to this.
2)To my knowledge, Connor received an invitation to play but rejected as he felt he would be too rusty after a year out from chess. The tone of the second question suggests that Connor playing is some sort of necessity which might inadvertently degrade the player who took his place - of course Connor would have been an excellent addition to the team, but I don't see the need for the negative attitude, why not just focus on the players we have?

As I understand the FIDE rules If a single player in the event is graded above 2200 then all games must have a 4 hour playing session (or longer).
It was not reasonable to make this an under 2200 event.

Time limits are (I guess) subject to ratifaction at a meeting on the evening of July 21. However they are likely to be.

Glorney & Faber 40 moves in 100 minutes followed by 20 minute QPF
U14 and U12 30 Moves in 75 minutes followed by 15 minutes QPF
U11 all moves in 40 minutes.

The under 11 event is an individual rather than a team event. I anticipate 4 guest players from abroad. Preparation has been rolling on in the background. Entries are restricted to the top 20 J10 or those just outside with a good case for selection - a good case judged by the normal junior selection rules. Entries are still being received.

Ref Connor's absence. Unusually for this notice board I have more facts than I am publishing. Speculation on this notice board helps nobody - I have confidence in the ability of board 5 in the Glorney team whoever that is going to be. Judging by the training game I played against Connor recently - rustiness is not a problem.

I suppose I am looking at Connor's availability from a Hamilton viewpoint, as I wanted to do some coaching for him. However I agree that the new board 5 must be supported now.

I have no strong feelings about the FIDE ratedness of the Glorney
