Hi, does anyone have a (rough) date for the Scottish Championships 2008? I'm asking this as last year I was unable to attend due to a non-chess related clash, and so, I hope to avoid doing that this year.

Regards.

IIRC we booked 5th to 13th (but I will double check with Sam)

Does this mean there is no venue booked yet - just the dates for the calendar? Also, I assume the month is July..? Thanks

Fair point, though I wouldn't be surprised if it was held in June as the grading for it takes several months to be processed, as far as I can remember. Definitely July then?

LOL Just catching up on this thread since my last post. Still think I got it right. What's IIRC? Which month? What happened to talk of an internaitonal in Glasgow this year? A one week + event needs to have dates and venue confirmed 12 months in advance if it is to give itself the best possible chance of getting a good attendance.

Merry Christmas everyone!

George,
I still think that you were out of order with your first set of comments on this thread. I think that we should be grateful to the people who take their time to organise events whether they be one day events, weekend tournaments or the National Championships. I think that you take that into account before making such comments

An early indication of how important the 2008 Scottish Championship is likely to be would be useful. Players have to plan their tournament schedules for the year, especially titled players.
In the last two years, I only entered in the week before the start since I did not know the strength of the tournament.
In 2007 it was the last tournament before selections were made so it was quite important.
In 2006, selections had already been made so arguably was of less importance.
No norm opportunities have been available recently. Will there be IM/GM norm opportunities ?

The Scotitsh will be part of an International Open this year. Finances are still being discussed with regard to (partial) sponsorship - this is taking longer than I would like. It is hoped to offer some inducements to Commonwealth players to make it a bit more interesting and would be part of Glasgow's build up to the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Entry forms will be available by mid February at the latest.
