The Scotitsh will be part of an International Open this year. Finances are still being discussed with regard to (partial) sponsorship - this is taking longer than I would like. Entry forms will be available by mid February at the latest.

Errr...that would be now then?

If the International Open idea falls through, I recommend the Scottish Championship is held at Hamilton again.
Our new premises is a small Scout Hut with ample space for a 10 player all-play-all championship.

regarding the championships,
are conditions going to be paid to titled players ?
or is it just the £2000/£300 that they are playing for ?

Andy,

Unless a last minute sponsor can be found then it is JUST the £2000/£300 that is being played for.
The Glasgow League are paying for the venue but even with this there is not enough money in the kitty to offer incentives.
My potential two sponsors have failed to deliver.

If anyone has a potential sponsor for this year or the future I would be delighted to hear from them.

Incidentally, I have encountered strong opposition from the rank and file player to their subsidising the 'stars', but no real problem to a sponsor doing so.

Well if the majority of rank and file players disagree with conditions for titled players, then they should not expect any 'stars' to turn up then. And presumably they are not too bothered by this. The thing is to attract strong players you need to at least pay their travel/accommodation, and to get a sponsor you need to have a decent tournament to begin with. But naturally no sponsor=no 'stars'.
So we end up with no sponsor=no stars=mediocre tourney=no sponsor..... Sometimes to improve something we need to put something in, no?

Anyway, the prize money is very generous for what will be a strong, mostly Scottish Open, and the chance of the money going to a Scot looks high, so that is a positive. Certainly a step in the right direction and looking forward to it. )
[Where is the emoticon for just a smile by the way!?]

Also, what is the entry fee? Or am i going blind?

Alex, could you put a confirmed list of entrants up on the website and update it regularly please ?
Then people can see whether it is going to be a 10-player all-play all, a tournament dominated by 1600-2000 rated players, or a tournament with
GM/IM norms. I will probably decide with 3 days to go, as usual.

George/Steve. I really like the idea of a challenge match and I think that this might attract sponsorship to the main tournament if there was a good sideshow too.

If the 'top players' only want to play if other 'top players' are playing and they all wait to see whether 'top players' enter before deciding whether to enter, no 'top players' will enter!

That is why top players need some incentive to want to participate. If sponsorship cannot be found then something needs to be done. The last 2 Scottish have been a failure in terms of attracting the top players. Whether this was down to lack of sponsorship or bad location or a combination of both I am not sure. Maybe the £2000 prize will be enough incentive we shall see.

I go back to the point of Olympiad places, It was a good idea which was rejected without good cause in my opinion.
