It's true, the Fide president visited Gaddafi within the last couple of days, and they played a game of Chess. I'm not sure who won, but I'm willing to bet that Gaddafi didn't resign.

In all seriousness though, surely such a meeting is not healthy for Chess in general? Does anyone know more information about this?

The official position seems to be that it was an attempt to promote a peaceful solution to the troubled situation in that part of the world.

What do people think?

Good idea?

Bad idea even if the attempt/reasons were genuine?

Might have been a good idea, but don't believe it was a genuine attempt?

Well it's one way of getting Chess into the media, but for the wrong reasons. It's not likely to inspire people to play Chess if they see that Gaddafi does it, probably quite the opposite actually.

Is it just me or does the Fide President look rather nervous in Gaddafi's presence anyway? Perhaps he was just concerned about a potential airstrike at any moment.

Perhaps he over rated his opponents position and could sense the presence of wee pawns of mass destruction

"Wee pawns of mass destruction" appeared in a post here by Hugh Hanlon in early 2003, before the invasion of Iraq.

And maybe even that wasn't the first time they were employed.

Why do you think it's an OTT reaction? I quite agree with their response, and don't think there is anything OTT about it.
