Thanks Angus.

That Ian Gray doesn't get anywhere near the office of First Minister. Anyway, let's not turn it into a political debate, if that's desired then we can create another topic in a different part of the forum. Smile

Do any of the manifestos make any commitments to chess? Wink

The NHS remark was intended to be analogous, and I stand by it.

In what way is access to the NHS analogous to access to the CS grading system?

A more accurate analogy for your position would be to expect access to both NHS & Private medical facilities on the basis that you have paid your taxes that have helped fund the NHS.

But that is nonsense as to attempt to draw any form of analogy between things so obviously different is not at all helpful.

I have suggested alternative ways of generating revenue.
I have suggested reasons why restricting access might have negative consequences.

If you genuinely want to debate the matter, then I feel you need to both acknowledge this and address these points – doing otherwise is not really debating the matter.

Trying to score points by picking holes in my analogy, while not really addressing my main points, is not entering a debate.

At any rate, analogies do not have to be perfect (nor comparable in terms of their national importance!), simply sensible enough to try to make a point, which I believe the NHS analogy does – it could be made with any service, and how it’s accessed/funded. You can fund things by having everyone pay a bit into the pot and encouraging widespread access to the same level of service (I believe this is not only fairer, but fosters feelings of community and “togetherness”) – or you can adopt a different approach……………

http://www.chessscotland.com/downloads/Accounts%202009-10.xls
In the most recent complete set of annual accounts under "Information Services" the expenditure figure includes a combined figure of wages to chief grader and webmaster for running grading and website, plus expenses and website costs. The same excel sheet list "Membership Services" part of the wages and expenses there could also be allocated to website running costs.

The cost of the web package upgrade and work so far on the site revision the additional expenditure is under £500. Andrew McHarg has kindly offered his services at a fraction of the true commercial rate for the upgrade project.
