But considering that so many people are proud of their country's flag black seems more appropriate. Eventually when we all know that countries are unnecessary constructs, we'll not need flags any more |

Had a look at the draw for today's round (round nine) again and Alan is the first untitled player to appear on the scene. I don't know how the norm formula works. Can someone shed some light on where he stands as far as norms are concerned? He looks as though he will at least get a good prize for his grading section (Thanks to Douglas for highlghting this earlier). |

Update 2 from Gibraltar today. Clement sadly lost so is out of the running for a good grading prize. Gary picked himself up (no surprise to me after cajoling/ encouragement/ nearly riot act read had all been tried) and won so he is chuffed to bits. ( errm.. and I am too). Alan is the revelation, it just goes to show that anything is possible if you have commitment, belief and support. For any young chess players in Scotland, ask yourself, would you like to try and achieve something like this? Well, go for it! |

Think Alan's average opposition will be in 2301-2339 range so needs 7/10 for IM norm.

Alan's Croatia GM norm can be viewed here http://ratings.fide.com/title_norms.phtml |

I agree with Douglas. Even eliminating his round 3 game still means he needs to win for a 9 round norm. |

I am sorry to say that Alan lost today in a close very long game. He has the consolation of a grand for finishing second in his grading bracket. Clement won today and finished 3rd in his grading bracket. His 5 point total was an agonising half point behind two others so no prize for him. The damage was done yesterday when he lost as it was still in his own hands then. Gary lost today too but was hoping to achieve 3 and a half points which he duly did so overall he is pretty pleased. |

and now FM Tate?
ADDED: Just noticed Alan listed in 38th place in today's chessbase report see http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=6993. It's been a long time since we saw a Scot placed so highly alongside such company in a Chessbase report. It really is great to see.
Of course, the big question now is will he make it into Dragons A team next season |
