Everyone has been fed & watered & gone for their 9am first game of the day - it might be a long day! We have ordered a few packed lunches as back up in case any games go to the wire & therefore they wont have time to get back to the hotel to eat before the 2nd round today. There is also the possibility that the 2nd round doesnt start on time which could mean some later finishes.
6 points in all achieved yesterday & a few missed opportunities.
I think everyone will appreciate the rest day tomorrow. |

Sorry its been a nightmare trying to get online - took me an hour just to get logged in tonight
The past 60 hours has definitely been unpredictable. On Tuesday morning we were sunbathing & in the swimming pools in what must have been the hottest & certainly the sunniest day. Yesterday started overcast & then the heavens opened & I mean opened to the point that those of us that went on an excursion had to wade through the water. Then last night we had a huge storm that the locals say they have never seen anything like it before or at least the amount of rainwater. It not only flooded the ground floor at our hotel so that the spa had to close irrespective but we also had a power cut from before light through to 6pm this evening. Breakfast & lunch was very basic & the best the kitchen could do under the circumstances. They had a generator for the lighting at the playing venue but fortunately normal service was resumed early evening. The chess playing results have been on a roller coaster too with 7.5 points scored Tuesday, 1 point yesterday & 9 points today with wins for Leora, Colin, Fergus, Alice, Andrew, Jonny, Clement & draws for Liam, Iona, Ali & Maryann. |

Everyone was up, prepped & had breakfast before they headed off for their last game of the tournament.
Unfortunately, Captiva & Leora are playing each other - what it does mean is that the point achieved however this game finishes, this trip will have matched % score of the Italy trip last year. Some would say that Italy was the Euros & therefore tougher but even the regular guys say this is the toughest tournament for the Worlds. Normally the host nation put a lot of players in but this hasnt been the case this year.
Fingers crossed for a high scoring finish |

I didn't realise we sent more than the rest of the home nations. That was a real surprise for me.
I'd love to have the funds to send a team the size of the Russians! |

Scalps are good but additionally the targets I set in advance are
(a) Return with an impressive points total - taken over the whole team.
(b) Return with significantly stronger U12 and U10 and U8 players.
(c) Make the the whole party enjoys their experience in Greece.
(a) is measurable as we progress
(b) is measurable throught the grading system in the few months after the event.
(c) I take action at the time and I take notice of any complaints or other feedback made at the time or shortly after our return.
The adults in the party will do our best to send reports back daily. This depends of course on internet accessibility
- even if that coverage is patchy then the event web site can be expected to give excellent coverage updated many time each day.
Link to that web site is on front page of CS site. Can you add link into this thread please |
36 hours afer landing at Glasgow I have to say that multiple thanks are due to all the juniors for their excellent behaviour throughout our time in Greece and also to all the adults present for creating and maintaining the correct atmosphere for their offspring to work hard, play hard and have a good time.
Points average I am told was 4/11 which is 36.4% of available points
Which to me sounds significantly better than my target of 32.7% (Team Score in Italy last year). I guess you can all predict my target for our next major international venture
A special thanks must go to to the parents of the 3 U10 players for arranging their leisure time around coaching slots. I expect and hope to see rewards coming the way of their children in terms of increased grade and further international opportunities. |

And the answer is 42 *
The next international junior venture is the Liverpool Quadrangular on Dec 10 to 12. After results from the Glasgow Congress are known the selectors will choose the final 2 places for the U12 team, the final 4 places for the U14 and the final place for the U16 team.
Choosing the final places is always a difficult decision - always a close call with much conflicting information to assess.
I hope to be able to announce the names of all 26 competing players by Friday 12th November.
*Last year our three teams scored between them 41.5 points. Any result above 42 means that our players have made progress. Any score below 42 means that I could have prepared the teams better. |
