The following has appeared on the ECforum. Anyone help?

Hello all,

I'm looking for any information or memories anybody might have about Eric Holt.

Eric was Scottish champion in 1971, played in the British that year finishing 7th=, did well in a variety of junior tournaments including making the A-Final of the European u-20 (other competitors included Beliavsky and Ribli) but then seems to have disappeared from the chess world completely. I gather he has moved to America, possibly Tarrytown, New York.

If anybody has any memories of Eric or any idea how I might contact him now I'd be really interested in hearing from you.

Many thanks

Jonathan Bryant

PS: Today's post on the S&BC Blog is about Eric. It seems he was quite a player.

Eric Holt was indeed a very promising player, who just "disappeared", after a decent showing (6.5/11), in Blackpool, Brit Ch 1971. He would definitely have been a candidate for the 1972 Scottish Olympiad team had he stayed in the game. I always had a slight hunch that he was very disappointed by his result in that Blackpool British, in which I played too. This may partly explain why he was so completely "down" after his loss against Ray Keene (even though Keene won both the game and the event quite deservedly). I think Eric was extraordinarily ambitious to finish at the top and "expected" much better. That relative "failure" may have had something to do with his suddenly dropping out of chess. But I'm only really speculating, as I didn't really know him personally at all well.

Thanks for posting this message Alex and thanks Craig for the reply. Interesting to hear your take on things.

Last night I got an email from ... Eric Holt! I'd sent a message to a website that mentioned him but didn't give any contact details. They passed it on to somebody who passed it on. The photo on the blog article is the right Eric I'm pleased to say.

Details of Scotland's involvement with the Glorney Cup from 1951 - 1970 have recently been posted; these include several photographs which include Eric Holt.

Dear all,

Thanks to Alex, Craig and Alan for replying to this thread.

People who knew Eric may be interested in the update article/interview with him that we've published on the blog today.
