Well the first batch have flown the coop, leaving terra firma from Prestwick at 17.02pm this afternoon (obviously on Jacqui time as flight time was 16.55pm) heading for Rome & then a 2.5hr coach drive to Fermo. 2nd batch due to leave Edinburgh tomorrow & a couple of strays leaving from other destinations & times. The team group is 32 (19 players) which to my knowledge is the largest delegation to go out to one of these junior events in a long time (or even at all).
Play starts Monday so if you want to keep up with the latest here is the link. We have representatives in all the age groups U18-U10.

I wish everyone well & a great time in achieving their ultimate goals which is to come back better players, enriched with the experience, having had good games & wins & most importantly a good time representing their country. |

Latest from the party
"Sharp reminder on landing of how different driving standards can be abroad. The last 10-20 feet of descent to the tarmac was done with the grace of a falling stone with a massive bang and the whole plane shook.
At 2pm on the Sunday afternoon our score stands at 37.5%
Which means that 62.5 %are missing presumed on Italian transportation.
Aim by the end of the day is to increase that score to 106 % with the successful rescue of the Irish team stranded at Rome.
Other that the the day for the 10 on the Prestwick flight has been relaxation acclimatising mixed up with coaching." |

Done!
Waited 4 hours for 'our' bus - weren't allowed to use bus sent for spanish squad even though they hadn't arrived so had to wait an extra 20 mins for our bus. Ugh
Then it was Faulty Towers check-in ....
But Phil has played a blinder with regards hotel selection - nice clean modern hotel with beer (and internet but we must wait until 10:00pm to find out how to access it ( |

Starting at midnight Internet access took me about 80 minutes to get through the complex set of rules regulations on line forms complying wioth antiterrorist legislation to allow me to access the internet through the hotel wifi system.
Would have been quick to get more credit on the Dongle
John Sanders has also got on line . he was faster than me |

Now that is what you call a nice start. Clement has just beaten an Italian FM
41 moves into Rocks' game and only 1 pawn each has been taken! |

As mentioned already the positive reults were Clement (win), Andrew & Shivan (draws). Shivan making his opponent offer three times before accepting!
Kai had an interesting game but was distracted by his opponent who took for ever even to make his moves, seemed very reluctant to pickup the piece. He would keep threaten to move then take his hand away, think again etc. By the end he had 25 mins left to Kai's 70mins or so.
The U12 and under players are all (bar Zak) new to this level and virtually all of the games were decided by single "oh dear opps" moments. Until that moment, and in many cases afterwards as well, our players made them work hard for their wins. No games were finished in the first hour.
The u14 and above in contrast to the younger players have seen it all before and many of these games were long, hard battles . We were concerned that we might be there all night when Ann noted that Ali's opponent was slower then Ali!
Have uploaded pictures from myself & John Sanders to:

Day has started well (apart from Cathy's Taxi trip from hell to get to the venue via a field!) with a win, nah a defibrillation by Peter Sanders of his opponent! |
