Chess Scotland is not sending representatives to this Junior event. Sections from U8 to U14.

However the organisers are providing free accommodation for 1 player per section and free accommodation for one coach per country.

Is there anyone out there who would like to organise a small party - potentially as small as 1 parent + 1 child to take advantage of the free accommodation offered.

If more than one group contact me within the next few days I will initally put all interested parties in contact with one another, but may ultimately have to select a winning proposal.

General regulations

1. Invitation
The Austrian Chess Federation has the honour of inviting your Chess Federation to participate in the European Union Youth Chess Championship 2009 at Mureck.
2. Participation
Each Federation can enter one player, boy or girl in any of the categories of under 8, 10, 12 and 14 as of January 1st, 2009.

Boys and girls will play in the same tournament, but with two separate scores. So we will have two European Union Youth Champions, one for the girls and one for the boys. Additional (extra) players can also be registered.
3. Registration - Conditions of participation
Entry forms must be sent back not later than
July 1st, 2009 by telefax or email.

Registration must mention the surname/s, first name/s, FIDE ID number, FIDE or National rating of each player. We also need the telephone, email/fax number of the delegation chief and of the person in charge of the federation. Please use the registration form enclosed. All travel expenses must be paid by the participants or their National Federation. Each player (invited or extra) has to pay the amount of Euros 60,- to the Organizing Committee when registering or on arrival at Mureck.

Transport from Graz airport or central station to Mureck and back will be free of charge.
4. Accommodation and meals
Board and lodging will be provided at Mureck or in its close surroundings. The Organising Committee can accommodate invited participants and a coach in double or triple rooms or in apartments. Free board and lodging is offered to players as well as to one coach per federation from Tuesday 4 (dinner) to Thursday 13 August (lunch).
Payments (Euros only) for all extra players and accompanying persons must be made in advance or in cash on arrival at Mureck.

The cost of lodging for additional (extra) players and accompanying persons for full board per day is the following:
in double and triple rooms: 40 Euros per person
in single rooms: 49 Euros per person

7. Rules and regulations
The tournament will be played according to the Swiss System in 9 rounds. National ratings will not be taken into consideration for the pairings. The rate of play will be according to FIDE regulations 90 min for the whole game + 30 sec increase for each move played.

For parent and ches playing junior this is around £1,000 worth of sponsorship waiting to be snapped up.

I agree this is a great opportunity for one of our top/near the top younger juniors. Strong tournament in a lovely country.

We would have considered it if we weren't committed to visiting wife's family in Brazil as soon as glorney/faber is over.

When I read it I also thought great event but given the time of year (familly holidays etc) it was a bit short notice.

Well,

It's a success in terms that Scotland have representatives at the Championship.

But! I don't agree with Phil and Andy that this is an acceptable way to manage a selection process for an event where they think Scotland should
be represented.

Clearly they've known about the event for at least 414 days.

First come First served and the opportunity held open for 14 hours before the first person to contact is selected is not an adequate procedure for what is an established event.

In all honesty I can't understand the reason that it has to be done this way
other than work load. If the work of IJD is too much then there needs to be more delegation or better still, polite requests to help. imho dyor
In respect of offering help/volunteering.
I did offer help over the possibility of sending a group to the Euro Youth. It was by e-mail though so it's possible this mail was not received.
The Euro Youth destination has I think been decided as a little dodgy (Georgia) and I don't think Scotland will be represented. England, France, Germany, Italy and over 20 other countries will be represented.

BTW. Good luck to The 'Espinosa' girls' who are in Scotland simply because their parents are living here. This definitely should not disqualify them from the opportunity once residency has been established. Although there should be a selection process if CS decide Scotland should be represented.

Those mentioned should not take this personally because they are doing other fine work all over the place and making a consistent effort in discharging their duties. The issue is, 'public', and establishing 'Standards' and that should be a concern for all the membership of CS including ofcourse themselves.

No offence taken. Phil advertised this event last year and there were no takers (hence the 414 days comment). There is no money from Chess Scotland going into this event, we have been offered places and this time a family has come forward and asked if they can take them up.

When we get tournaments coming in with sponsored places like this we do like to offer them out and try to fill the places. I have and will continue to post any invites we get.

If Ali is successful in his quest to become ECU president, I think we will see more and more of this.

Selection is easy when there is only 1 party interested in going. Austria is a lovely country and somewhere where Karen and I love going on holidays. I would recommend it to anyone. Hopefully we will get a good report back about the tournamnet and we can interest more people in going next year.

That's interesting Phil,

But why are you trying to miss the point?

Not everybody i.e likes pushing themselves forward. Not everyone reads the notice board. It's not the selection process used for all other Junior Selections.

Perhaps next year CS can make some selections and then people can let the JID know if they are interested or not?

By all accounts I've read (mainly on the ECF site) it's an excellent tournament.

I offer my assistance to the JID to do the organising.

For the record, the ECF do not make selections for this event in the same way that they do for the World Youth and European Youth. A variety of children are invited, including "... sometimes just good kids who support our junior system" as well as stronger players.

CS do selections for in most cases (exception being Georgia this year)

World Youth
European Youth
Glorney
Liverpool Quadrangular

the budget at that is pushed to its limits giving very limited assistance to those taking part - to extend to other seemingly great events would not be practical apart from the organising time factors. The current event in question, as already been pointed out, clashes with the British which we would hope would get Scottish Junior entries as a priority over other events.

The Noticeboard is here for CS membership & if they are involved & keen enough they should be active enough to check it on a regular basis for updates, events & opportunities.

Andy has stated that he will publish details of any future events that he is notified of but it might be easier to go the old route & say nothing & CS only get involved in the events as stated above. But in case anyone is interested a large Scottish party support the Benidorm event for which you dont need your federation to nominate.

Thanks for clarifying the junior international events for which CS does selections.

The selections for Mureck were though announced on the selections page of CS

I think that is where Andy's first questions about the selections came from.

I don't know if you saw my offer to help organise participation in this event next year?

Also as far as I'm aware Mureck Austria is a junior event where the accomodation costs are paid. Because of this the event can be attended for a reasonable cost without Chess Scotland having to give financial support.

i.e. This year Scotland have 2 talented girls representing us. Perhaps next year some boys can attend also?

I think Benedorm is more of an adult event where juniors can participate but I don't think accomodation costs are paid?
